FWIW, the per line staging functionality in GitUp (https://gitup.co/) is quite easy and straightforward. Very lightweight program that you can open via cli (`gitup` when in a git directory). - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
Gitup \Mac only]) and the command line at the same time. There are some esoteric commands I can’t remember so it’s nice having a GUI to do it and it’s nice having visual feedback incase of a screwup. Source: about 2 years ago
I only use it to keep track of certain projects. Gitup (Mac only) is another GUI client I use for visualizing progress and undoing mistakes. Source: about 2 years ago
A git client: Fork (paid), GitFox (paid), or Tower (subscription) for git version control. Which one you use is personal preference / price sensitivity. It's Ford vs Chevy. GitUp is free but a little weirder UI, though very powerful. Source: over 2 years ago
I typically use the CLI, but GitUp is the best git visualization tool I've ever found (although it's mac-only). Source: over 2 years ago
> Wonder if anyone has made a git client that lets you manipulate it at that level. I believe you're describing GitUp [1]. I can't really say much about it, though, as I've never used it myself (because it's OSX only). [1]: https://gitup.co/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
I thought Windows Sandbox would be more useful but over time I just haven't fired it up... I kind of forgot about it. I do use Hyper-V. Every Windows user should run WizTree on their personal machines at least once a year to get a lightning fast report on disk space usage. Cleanup should start wih the largest items or you're just wasting your time! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33893815#33894842 Bitvise SSH... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago

I've used GitUp for years: https://gitup.co Free, open source, and has really nice keyboard navigation / shortcuts. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago
While GitUp is a GUI app, and only available for macOS, I think it's worth noting that it has some great undo/redo capabilities built in. From what I understand, some of them were more feasible to develop because they implemented their own plumbing (GitUpKit), instead of relying on the official git plumbing. https://gitup.co/. - Source: Hacker News / almost 4 years ago
GitUp is carving out a niche for itself as a noteworthy Git client on macOS, standing out with its free, open-source offering and unique user experience. Its public reception, as highlighted in various tech forums and articles, reflects a predominantly positive sentiment, with its distinct advantages detailed across numerous discussions.
First and foremost, GitUp is often recommended for its simplicity and powerful visualization capabilities. For users operating within the macOS ecosystem, it provides an effective Git GUI client solution, which stands out particularly due to its intuitive handling of branches and merges. This clarity in visualization appeals to users who appreciate seeing their project's progress and structure at a glance, which is a consistent highlight in the product mentions.
Moreover, the tool is lauded for its ease of use in functionality such as per-line staging, which facilitates more precise control over code changes. This capability is frequently pointed out as one of the lightweight program’s strengths, especially for those who navigate concurrently between command line interfaces and GUIs in their development workflow.
An interesting aspect of GitUp's toolkit, the GitUpKit, is its flexibility to allow developers to build custom Git applications, thus fostering innovation and personalization in the development process. This component distinguishes GitUp from many of its competitors by offering a base for further development and bespoke solutions, enhancing its attractiveness for developers who are also inclined to create their own tools.
However, GitUp's design is sometimes described as unconventional or “weirder” compared to other Git clients, which can be a point of contention. While this unique UI contributes to its distinction, it may deter new users accustomed to more traditional interfaces found in competitors like SourceTree or GitKraken. Still, the adaptability and rich keyboard shortcuts present a compelling case for users to integrate it into their Git workflow after a period of adjustment.
Despite being a macOS-exclusive application, GitUp garners recommendations from various forums and posts, highlighting its niche appeal. For users seeking a robust visualization tool for Git operations, GitUp frequently comes up as a favorite, often being described as the best git visualization tool available on the platform. This high praise underlines its focused and specialized capabilities for macOS users.
In summary, GitUp's public perception positions it as a formidable Git client for macOS, appreciated for its open-source availability, powerful visualization, and customizability through GitUpKit. While its UI might be an acquired taste for some, its functionalities meet the needs of many developers looking for an integrated, visual approach to Git management. As the conversations indicate, the tool’s idiosyncrasies ultimately enrich the user's development experience, positioning GitUp as a valuable asset in the Git tool landscape.
