Possible disadvantages of Nextcloud

  • Setup Complexity
Setting up and maintaining a Nextcloud instance can be technically challenging, especially for users without a background in server management.
  • Performance Issues
Depending on the hardware and configuration, Nextcloud might experience performance issues, particularly under heavy load or with extensive use of additional apps.
  • Resource Intensive
Nextcloud can be resource-intensive in terms of CPU, memory, and storage, especially when additional features and apps are enabled.
  • Dependency Management
Managing dependencies and ensuring compatibility with other installed software can be cumbersome, requiring regular updates and maintenance.
  • Limited Official Support
While there is a strong community, official support can be limited or costly, which may be a disadvantage for enterprise environments requiring reliable assistance.

hashdeep features and specs

  • Cross-platform compatibility
Hashdeep is compatible with various operating systems including Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a flexible tool for users across different platforms.
  • Recursive directory scanning
Hashdeep can recursively scan directories, allowing for a comprehensive verification of file integrity across complex file hierarchies.
  • Supports multiple hash algorithms
The tool supports a variety of hash algorithms such as MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256, providing users with options based on their security and speed requirements.
  • Audit and verify mode
Hashdeep can perform audit and verify operations, allowing users to check file integrity against known hash values, enhancing data security.
  • Comparison capabilities
It offers features for comparing hash lists, useful for finding discrepancies and verifying data between different systems or backups.

Possible disadvantages of hashdeep

  • Command-line interface
Hashdeep operates entirely through a command-line interface, which may be intimidating or inconvenient for users who prefer graphical user interfaces.
  • Performance with large datasets
While efficient, hashdeep can exhibit performance slowdowns when dealing with extraordinarily large datasets, impacting speed and resource usage.
  • Limited documentation
The documentation available for hashdeep might not be comprehensive enough for all users, especially those new to command-line tools, leading to a steeper learning curve.
  • No native support for parallel processing
Hashdeep does not natively support parallel processing, which can hinder performance on modern multi-core processors when hashing numerous files.

  • My personal journey learning about prompt-injections and how that influences my use of AI (agents)
So what about having a stricter separation between data and instructions? Let's look at that using, for example, the Nextcloud AI assistant. Nextcloud-Hub is a self-hosted file storage platform with collaboration tools. It has also an AI Assistant App and guess what, it can summarize text (and much more). I've set it all up with the OpenAI API using the gpt-5-chat-latest model. When I click on any file and... - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
  • Nextcloud vs ownCloud: Which File Server to Use?
Nextcloud and ownCloud share a common ancestor. In 2016, Nextcloud's founder (Frank Karlitschek, who also founded ownCloud) forked ownCloud to create Nextcloud, taking most of the developer community with him. Since then, the projects have diverged significantly. - Source: dev.to / 5 months ago

  • How do I manage years of data?
Started to be able to bring some order after I discovered hashdeep. Basically I started from a reasonably clean disk with folders to sort files, created lists of hashes using hashdeep, then used it to scan all my existing disks for unknown files. With the correct flags hashdeep can list all files it finds on a disk that it has not in its lists already. That help a lot to figure out what is worth wasting time on.... Source: about 4 years ago
