Most compressors upload your images or spit out renamed copies you have to sort through โ€” ImgZilla does neither: it runs fully offline and compresses in place, keeping the same filename, path, and format. It also handles entire folders recursively with no quality dial to fuss over, and includes a built-in compare view so you can verify the visually lossless result yourself instead of taking it on faith.

What's the story behind your product?

imgZilla's answer

Four years ago I built a simple web-based image compressor and shared it online. People used it, but the recurring pushback was: was it really processing locally, or uploading photos to a server โ€” and could it just be a native app instead? I didn't have a good answer at the time, so I said I'd figure out the technical issues later. It took a few years, but ImgZilla is that answer โ€” a native macOS app that runs fully offline and compresses in place, built to finally close the gap that old thread left open.

PNG โ€” oxipng (truly lossless) SVG โ€” svgcleaner (truly lossless) JPEG โ€” libjpeg-turbo (visually lossless re-encoding) WebP โ€” libwebp (visually lossless re-encoding) AVIF โ€” libavif + libaom (visually lossless re-encoding) HEIC โ€” Apple's native ImageIO framework (visually lossless re-encoding) GIF โ€” gifsicle (visually lossless re-encoding)

It also runs inside Apple's App Sandbox, which restricts it to only reading and writing files the user explicitly selects or drags in โ€” the same constraint that makes fully offline processing possible in the first place.
