Freshdesk provides a free helpdesk system so we can manage our support tickets. They have the feature that allows us to send emails through our own email address (vs using their own email address), and an app that works well to respond and organize tickets.
My biggest gripe with the service is that they are missing a feature that HelpScout has, where we can reply directly to the notification email and that reply gets sent to the customer. With freshdesk, we have to log into their portal or use the app in order to send a reply.
We installed the software and started to populate it. After a while we experienced login problems. For some mysterious reason, some users can only login to it from one computer but when they try it from a different computer using the same credentials then it fails. Documentation is poor - when we go to the Wiki, the FAQ pages are not available? The discussion page is also empty. We could not find a user manual. We are looking for other options.
Running on Ubuntu 16.04LTS server. It works very well. We wrote some aditional php web-page functions to directly access the MYSQL database to implement a few additional functions. Because it is open source it is relatively easy to modify for specific extra functions. Fast FREE and not encumbered by proprietary stuff, adverts or forcing you to divulge company data to an online service. Easy to do backups and clone to other machines. A really useful tool. It is a good idea if the administrator has a basic competance in Linux and web/php admin. Overall very good.
Freshdesk might be a bit more popular than PartKeepr. We know about 12 links to it since March 2021 and only 10 links to PartKeepr. When I click on it and try to view my ticket it asks me to log in, but then tells me my email and password are incorrect, I can log into Moog music just fine....and NOT freshdesk.com. Source: 5 months ago
What I suggest is using freshdesk.com. It's free for some of the base needs such as automatically creating ticket when people email as support email, giving clients a portal to fill out what you want them to fill out which creates a ticket, automatically notifies people on your team (up to 10) and allows you to create departments and emails them when a ticket is assigned to that department, reply via email allows... Since Freewallet is a quite small company they outsource their "support" from this Indian startup the communication is quite complicated. If the company doesn't want to spend more money in order to hire a good support engineer, and instead prefers to save some money by going offshore. Then this companies' customers swill suffer. For your use case it sounds that snipe-it might be the perfect fit. It can be self hosted, open source, has a login system, has a user system incase you let people borrow items, supports barcodes, supports putting an item out of service incase its broken, supports keeping track of serial numbers and much more.
