So this post is about something I've been chewing on for months but finally moved on: ripping Google Analytics out of three side projects and picking a privacy-focused alternative. Specifically, I'll compare Umami, Plausible, and Fathom โ the three I actually evaluated โ and walk through the migration steps that worked for me. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
Fathom is the most "premium" option. No self-hosted version โ it's a paid product, and they lean into that. The upside is it just works, with excellent uptime and performance. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
Fathom takes a different approach โ it's a proprietary, hosted-only product. No self-hosting option. They've bet everything on being the simplest, most privacy-respecting paid analytics tool. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
I've been using Umami for this โ it's a self-hosted, privacy-focused analytics tool that doesn't require cookie banners and is fully GDPR-compliant out of the box. Compared to alternatives like Plausible (also excellent, but their hosted plan costs more) or Fathom (hosted-only, pricier), Umami hits a sweet spot of simplicity and zero cost if you self-host. There are a few companies in this space that are trying to do the "Security Seal of Approval" thing to various degrees. Tidelift is one company that has a bunch of "catalogs"[0] of packages. I'm not sure how their package metadata is generated though -- maybe semi-manually? There is also Bytesafe[1] which is supposed to help give you a way to "firewall" yourself from unapproved dependencies. I don't think they... - Source: Hacker News / almost 4 years ago
I was trying bytesafe.dev recently and it was good for me, as it would stop the npm install of any package that had a security issue. But now that I am out of the free trial, it is to limited for me without paying for an upgraded plan. And their support never replies to my requests. Source: over 4 years ago
These steps will let you get your own private repository using Bytesafe:. - Source: dev.to / over 4 years ago
When using private repositories from Bytesafe, public dependencies will be proxied, pulling any required (and allowed) version into your private Maven repository. Using public repositories like Maven Central as an upstream makes sure you can access your organization's required open source dependencies - while maintaining security and control. - Source: dev.to / over 4 years ago
