Bitcut is an AI-powered video editor for iPhone that turns long-form videos into short, scroll-stopping clips ready for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok.

How it works

Drop in a long video โ€” a podcast, a lecture, a vlog, a gameplay session โ€” and Bitcut analyzes the content using AI (CLIP + Whisper). It identifies the most engaging moments, crops them to 9:16 vertical format with smart face tracking, and adds animated captions. The result: multiple short clips ready to post, in minutes instead of hours.

Key capabilities

  • Smart Crop 9:16 โ€” automatically reframes horizontal footage to vertical, keeping the speaker or subject centered
  • Beat Sync โ€” aligns cuts to the rhythm of the music using FFT audio analysis, so edits feel natural and energetic
  • Lip-Sync Trim โ€” never cuts a speaker mid-word or mid-sentence
  • Karaoke Subtitles โ€” auto-generated animated captions that highlight words in sync with speech
  • AI Scene Detection โ€” finds the most interesting, shareable moments from long recordings
  • DaVinci Resolve Export โ€” generates OpenTimelineIO XML for professional post-production

Who it's for

Content creators, podcasters, marketers, and social media managers who need to repurpose long videos into short-form content at scale โ€” without spending hours in a timeline editor.

What makes it different

Most AI clipping tools are web-based and require uploading video to a server. Bitcut runs natively on iPhone โ€” processing happens on-device, which means faster results, no upload wait, and full privacy. The beat sync and lip-sync trim features go beyond simple "find highlights" โ€” they produce clips that actually feel edited by a human.

Free to use with basic features. Available on the App Store.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Descript and Bitcut.

What makes your product unique?

Bitcut's answer:

Bitcut processes video entirely on-device โ€” no uploading to servers, no waiting, no privacy concerns.

Most AI clipping tools are web-based and require you to upload your footage first. Bitcut runs natively on iPhone and iPad, so a 30-minute video gets analyzed in minutes, not hours.

Key differentiators: - AI Smart Cuts โ€” generates up to 8 Shorts from one video, each with a quality score (hook, completeness, engagement) - Face Tracking โ€” auto-reframes 16:9 to 9:16 by following faces, no manual cropping - Beat sync โ€” cuts aligned to music rhythm automatically - Full timeline editor โ€” completely free, no paywall on core editing tools

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Bitcut's answer:

  • Speed โ€” works offline on your phone, no upload wait, unlike most web-based clipping tools that require cloud processing
  • Privacy โ€” your footage never leaves your device
  • Full editor included โ€” most AI clipping tools only generate clips. Bitcut has a complete multi-track timeline editor for fine-tuning
  • Affordable โ€” $99/year, significantly less than comparable tools on the market
  • AI Subtitles โ€” 7 animation styles with word-level precision, auto-translation to 12 languages

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Bitcut's answer:

  • Independent YouTubers repurposing long videos into Shorts
  • Podcast hosts creating clip highlights for social media
  • Social media managers at small agencies
  • Online course creators extracting key moments from lectures
  • Musicians creating beat-synced promo clips from concerts

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Bitcut's answer:

  • Solo YouTubers and podcasters without a dedicated editor
  • Social media managers maintaining posting schedules across platforms
  • Online course creators extracting key moments from lectures
  • Musicians and DJs creating beat-synced promo clips

What's the story behind your product?

Bitcut's answer:

Bitcut started as InstaClip โ€” a personal tool built to solve a real problem: turning hour-long podcast recordings into engaging short clips without spending the whole evening in a timeline editor.

The early prototype just found silences and cut around them. Then came AI scene detection, automatic transcription, beat sync, face tracking, and smart reframing.

The name changed to Bitcut โ€” "every bit counts" โ€” reflecting both the digital nature (bits) and the precision of each cut. Built by an indie developer as part of a portfolio of AI-powered media tools.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Bitcut's answer:

  • Swift/SwiftUI โ€” native iOS interface, optimized for iPhone and iPad
  • On-device AI โ€” scene analysis and highlight detection
  • Whisper โ€” speech transcription and subtitle generation
  • FFmpeg โ€” video processing, encoding, format conversion
  • FFT audio analysis โ€” beat detection for music-synced editing
  • Face detection โ€” tracking and auto-reframing to vertical format

Very useful for editing scripts/interview videos.

Coming from a video editing background, Descript might take some getting used to. But once you figure it out, it speeds up your editing (especially interviews/long-form voiceover). The captions are very nice to work with, but a bit limited in terms of styles. There are a lot more caption styles, transitions, and effects in CapCut, but Descript excels in simplicity and speed.

The saved layouts (you can make your own) are very good if you want to create a bunch of videos on different topics with the same design scheme or branding.
