Post Formatter is a free browser extension and set of online tools for adding text formatting to social platforms that only accept plain text. It converts text into Unicode characters that render as bold, italic, strikethrough, underline, and 20+ font styles, so the formatting displays correctly on LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, and Pinterest.

The extension formats text inline as you write, with keyboard shortcuts, a live post preview, Smart Paste from Google Docs / Word / Notion, draft management, a character counter, and optional AI proofreading and auto-styling (with your own OpenRouter API key).

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Buffer and Post Formatter.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Post Formatter's answer:

You format inline instead of copy-pasting, it works across seven platforms (not just LinkedIn), and it adds 20+ font styles. AI proofreading and auto-styling run on your own OpenRouter API key, so you control both cost and data.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Post Formatter's answer:

LinkedIn creators, founders, marketers, recruiters, job seekers and social-selling professionals who want their posts to stand out in the feed - anyone who writes regularly on LinkedIn or other text-only social platforms and wants bold headlines, cleaner structure, and a quick preview before publishing

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Post Formatter's answer:

A Chrome Extension (Manifest V3) written in TypeScript and React, with its UI rendered in a Shadow DOM so it doesn't clash with host-page styles. Text styling uses Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols rather than HTML/CSS. Optional AI features call the OpenRouter API. The companion site (postformatter.com) is built with Astro, React and Tailwind CSS, hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

What makes your product unique?

Post Formatter's answer:

Post Formatter styles text inline, directly inside the LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Threads and Bluesky post box - you select your text and format it without copy-pasting from a separate website. It uses real Unicode characters (from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block), so bold, italic and 20+ other styles display correctly for every reader on any device. It also bundles the whole workflow in one place: live post preview, Smart Paste from Google Docs, a character counter, drafts, and optional AI proofreading

What's the story behind your product?

Post Formatter's answer:

LinkedIn's post composer only accepts plain text, so there's no built-in way to bold a headline or italicize a key phrase. Post Formatter was built to close that gap in a single free tool - inline Unicode formatting plus the surrounding workflow (preview, drafts, character counting) that creators were otherwise piecing together from several separate sites.

The best AI social media management tools in 2026
Buffer charges per channel, not per seat. The Free plan connects three channels with 10 scheduled posts each, and the Essentials plan runs $5 per channel per month on annual billing ($6 monthly). The catch is that per-channel pricing scales badly: a six-network business pays about $30 a month on Essentials for scheduling alone, before analytics. For a side-by-side cost view,...
