Dynamic Content: One of WordPressโs biggest advantages is its ability to handle dynamic content like comments, forms, or membership systems. While services like Disqus or Staticman can add dynamic features like comments to Jekyll sites, they donโt offer the same level of functionality or flexibility that WordPress does. Since I was working with basically no database or no backend service at all, I had to choose an external service for this and what else does this better than Disqus . - Source: dev.to / about 1 year ago
Since our site is a static site, we need to rely on external services to provide a comment system. The most famous one is Disqus. However, its free plan forces use to show a lot of ADs to the users, which I dont like. So I chose giscus, which uses GitHub Discussions as the storage place for comments. The only downside is that it doesnt allow users to log in and comment with Google or social media accounts like... - Source: dev.to / about 1 year ago

So basically, 9anime uses disqus as a comment section because that's what it is for. If you want to comment or edit your profile you have to make an account there and edit it in their website which is disqus.com I think. Source: over 2 years ago

I also host my weblog on github pages but use Pelican as static generator which is python based. The experience has been good so far as I only need it for static blog posts and a few pages like portfolio, about, etc. The only dynamic part I need is comments and for that I use disqus. So far I know that * https://disqus.com * block will block the website https://disqus.com/ and https://disqus.com/features/engage/ but not https://blog.disqus.com/ . Also, disabling Javascript gives a plain "Sorry, your browser is unsupported." message which makes me believe something's up. Using * disqus.com * block seemingly does nothing. Public Opinion on DISQUS: A Summary
Disqus, a prominent player in the commenting and community engagement space, garners a mix of approval and criticism from users across various platforms. Many public mentions highlight its widespread adoption and the conveniences it brings to static websites. However, opinions vary on its functionality, monetization strategies, and privacy considerations.
Key Strengths
Widely Recognized and Integrative: Disqus is extensively used across the web, as indicated by its mention in numerous posts about blogging platforms and content management systems. It is noted for seamless integration with static site generators like Jekyll, Hugo, and tools like Ghost and Next.js. Its broad compatibility is a key selling point, making it a go-to option for adding dynamic comment features where backend capabilities are limited.
Comprehensive Features: The platform supports user logins using popular accounts like Google and other social media, a feature that sets it apart from some competitors such as giscus. Additionally, its use of advanced moderation tools, including the integration of Jigsaw's Perspective API, reflects its commitment to managing toxic behavior effectively.
Auth Providers and Engagement Analysis: Disqus supports OAuth integration, thus broadening its appeal to developers seeking flexible authentication options. Its analytics capabilities are also noted, valued by users who prioritize audience activity insights.
Areas of Criticism
Monetization Drawbacks: One significant sticking point for users, especially those utilizing the free tier, is the mandatory display of advertisements. This is perceived negatively by content creators who seek an ad-free experience to maintain aesthetic and user experience standards.
Data Privacy and Commodification Concerns: Disqus has been critiqued for its data monetization practices, with some users expressing discomfort over their data being commoditized. The sentiment "if itโs free, you or your data are the commodity" captures this concern, reflecting a broader unease in the digital community regarding data privacy.
Limitations Compared to Full CMS: While Disqus provides valuable commenting features, it falls short of the rich, dynamic capabilities offered by comprehensive content management systems like WordPress, particularly when it comes to more sophisticated functionalities such as ecommerce and interactive forms.
Conclusion
In summary, Disqus remains a robust option for users seeking straightforward integration of commenting functionalities without the complexity of a full CMS. Its broad adoption and comprehensive features, including user engagement analytics and moderation tools, are praised by many. However, the platform's monetization approach and privacy-related criticisms highlight areas for potential improvement. For discerning users, weighing the need for advanced interactivity against the desire for privacy and ad-free experiences will be essential in making an informed choice.
