Notesnook
OwnSync Note is a privacy-first workspace where you truly own your data. Notes sync directly to your private Google Driveโno vendor servers, no lock-in. Built for a clean Markdown workflow, it features a rich-text editor with "Secret Masking" to hide sensitive strings like passwords or API keys during screen-sharing. Enjoy "Copy Easy" for one-click snippets and "Smart Paste" for auto-formatting JSON and source code. Whether you're managing complex configs or personal journals, OwnSync Note keeps your data strictly yours.
UpNote
OwnSync NoteUpNote is highly recommended for students, professionals, and writers who need an organized space to capture thoughts, manage tasks, or store information. It's especially suited for users who prefer a minimalist design with powerful features, and those who need seamless synchronization across devices.
OwnSync Note's answer:
Our primary audience consists of developers, indie hackers, and privacy-conscious professionals. Itโs designed for those who work with code, manage sensitive snippets, and need a secure workspace that they truly own.
OwnSync Note's answer:
OwnSync Note started with a simple goal: create a professional Markdown editor that respects user privacy. We wanted a tool that feels fast and local but uses the cloud we already trustโGoogle Driveโeliminating the need to trust another third-party server with our private thoughts and keys.
OwnSync Note's answer:
OwnSync Note is built on the philosophy: "Your notes, your cloud, your control". Unlike traditional apps, we never store your data on our servers. Instead, it syncs directly to your own Google Drive. Unique features like "Secret Masking" for privacy during screen-sharing and "Copy Easy" for instant snippet management make it stand out for professional use.
OwnSync Note's answer:
Choose OwnSync Note if you want total data ownership without vendor lock-in. Each note is stored as a separate file in your Drive, and you can import/export JSON or Markdown anytime. It offers a superior "local-first" experience with specialized tools like "Smart Paste" for auto-formatting code and JSON that generic note apps lack.
OwnSync Note's answer:
The app is built with high-performance web technologies, leveraging the Google Drive API for secure OAuth2 synchronization. It utilizes a rich-text editor capable of handling Markdown, JSON, and base64 image encoding directly within the note files.
OwnSync Note's answer:
Simple UI, Lightweight and cross platform. Also affordable.

For those that don't want to manage backups, sync and versioning, UpNote[1] a has scheduled offline backup and restore in Markdown format. Supports Android stylus/Apple Pencil drawing as bonus. Joplin comes second but is difficult to setup, lacks versioning, trash bin, auto-backup, and slow react native mobile app that doesn't sync in the background. Obsidian Sync is close but expensive and the app doesn't offer... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
I'd check out Upnote - https://getupnote.com/. Source: over 2 years ago
UpNote was my winner. Easiest, most flexible formatting (the only app with keyboard shortcuts for text colors and highlight colors), among many other features. More intuitive than most of the recommendations you'll see here. Actually has a formatting toolbar, unlike many of the recommendations you'll see here. Source: over 2 years ago
