Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing SingleFile and Markdown Web Clipper.

What makes your product unique?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Fidelity and ownership. Code blocks, tables, math, and footnotes survive conversion intact, images are saved next to the file, and everything lands as plain Markdown files on your own disk โ€” a local folder, an Obsidian vault, a Gist, or the clipboard. No account, no cloud, no telemetry. Free and MIT-licensed.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Honest answer: most clippers convert HTML similarly these days. The differences are in what happens after โ€” this one saves images locally, writes straight into a local folder or Obsidian vault with YAML frontmatter, works without an account, and the optional Pro upgrade is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. If you need mobile capture or a full read-later ecosystem, a hosted service will fit better; if you want your clips as files you own, that's exactly what this is for.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

People who live in Markdown: Obsidian and Logseq users, developers, researchers, and anyone piping web content into LLMs โ€” clipping a selection as Markdown is far more token-efficient than screenshots.

What's the story behind your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

I built it because every clipper I tried either mangled code blocks and tables or wanted to keep my articles in its cloud. After Pocket shut down and MarkDownload disappeared in Chrome's Manifest V2 purge, "your notes should be plain files you own" stopped being a preference and became a requirement. It's open source (MIT) and the core is free forever.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

TypeScript and React on Manifest V3, built with WXT. Extraction uses Defuddle, HTMLโ†’Markdown conversion is Turndown with GFM plus math/footnote handling, and the built-in editor is CodeMirror 6. Conversion runs entirely in your browser โ€” no server involved.

Copy Selected Links - I use this in combination with a text editor like Smultron on Mac. Cmd + f "https" and replace with "yt-dlp " and paste the full list into terminal usually does the trick when grabbing tons of links at once, which most frequently for me would be YouTube and Soundcloud links. If you are in chrome (firefox too, I think) you can bookmark all your open tabs. Then at least some of it is stored. The problem starts when you want to go back to a page where you felt you had something important to find and the page is down. For that, you could use an extension like SingleFile which downloads a page with all images as a single html file. It has its limits, but for regular pages it works pretty...
