Web2MD.org features and specs

  • Simple Conversion Tool
Web2MD.org offers a straightforward way to convert web pages into Markdown format, which is useful for developers, writers, and content creators who need clean, portable text formatting.
  • Free to Use
The service appears to be free, making it accessible for anyone who needs quick Markdown conversions without a subscription or payment requirement.
  • Time-Saving for Documentation
For users who frequently need to repurpose web content into Markdown for documentation, notes, or static site generators, this tool can save significant manual formatting time.
  • Lightweight and Fast
Being a single-purpose tool, it likely loads quickly and performs its core function without unnecessary bloat or complex navigation.
  • Useful for Developers
Developers working with Markdown-based platforms like GitHub, Jekyll, or Hugo can benefit from quickly converting reference material or articles into a compatible format.

Possible disadvantages of Web2MD.org

  • Limited Formatting Accuracy
Automated HTML-to-Markdown conversion tools often struggle with complex layouts, embedded media, tables, or custom CSS, which can result in formatting errors or loss of content structure.
  • Lack of Customization Options
The tool may not offer advanced settings for controlling how specific elements (like images, links, or code blocks) are converted, limiting flexibility for users with specific needs.
  • Potential Privacy Concerns
Submitting URLs or content to a third-party conversion service could raise concerns about data privacy, especially for internal or sensitive web pages.
  • Dependency on External Website
Since it's a web-based tool, users are reliant on the site's uptime and continued availability, which could be an issue if the service becomes unavailable or discontinued.
  • No Batch Processing
If the tool only supports converting one page at a time, this could be inefficient for users needing to convert multiple pages or entire websites into Markdown.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Web2MD.org and Markdown Web Clipper.

What makes your product unique?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Fidelity and ownership. Code blocks, tables, math, and footnotes survive conversion intact, images are saved next to the file, and everything lands as plain Markdown files on your own disk โ€” a local folder, an Obsidian vault, a Gist, or the clipboard. No account, no cloud, no telemetry. Free and MIT-licensed.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Honest answer: most clippers convert HTML similarly these days. The differences are in what happens after โ€” this one saves images locally, writes straight into a local folder or Obsidian vault with YAML frontmatter, works without an account, and the optional Pro upgrade is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. If you need mobile capture or a full read-later ecosystem, a hosted service will fit better; if you want your clips as files you own, that's exactly what this is for.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

People who live in Markdown: Obsidian and Logseq users, developers, researchers, and anyone piping web content into LLMs โ€” clipping a selection as Markdown is far more token-efficient than screenshots.

What's the story behind your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

I built it because every clipper I tried either mangled code blocks and tables or wanted to keep my articles in its cloud. After Pocket shut down and MarkDownload disappeared in Chrome's Manifest V2 purge, "your notes should be plain files you own" stopped being a preference and became a requirement. It's open source (MIT) and the core is free forever.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

TypeScript and React on Manifest V3, built with WXT. Extraction uses Defuddle, HTMLโ†’Markdown conversion is Turndown with GFM plus math/footnote handling, and the built-in editor is CodeMirror 6. Conversion runs entirely in your browser โ€” no server involved.
