You're probably better off using home assistant if possible. In the case that you can't, what you can do is create some type of script that will send a web hook to IFTTT as soon as you log on that will turn your smart plug on, and another one that will do the opposite when you log off. Start from no customization at all, organise a good folder structure to stick with, and learn a few hotkeys. Then just whenever you think of something that you think might make your life easier, google it and see what app helps.
