The other reason is coverage. If you are a Romanian speaker learning English or Russian, or a Ukrainian speaker learning English, most parallel-text apps have nothing for you. BiReader was built with those pairs as a first-class case rather than an afterthought.

Beelinguapp and LingQ are both good tools with far larger libraries. If you want a curated catalogue of professionally narrated classic texts, they are the better choice.

Two things. First, the stories are generated on demand rather than drawn from a fixed catalogue — you pick a topic, a CEFR level and a language pair, and get a story written for that combination. Length scales with level, from around 150 words at A1 to 900 at C1. Second, BiReader supports pairs most reading apps ignore: Romanian–English, Romanian–Russian, Ukrainian–English and similar Eastern European combinations, not just the usual English–Spanish and English–French.

I wanted to read aloud in a foreign language every day. Not the same passage repeatedly — something new each time, because rereading turns into recitation rather than reading.

Two things made that hard to arrange. The first was novelty: parallel-text libraries are catalogues, and a catalogue runs out. Work through what exists at your level, and you either start rereading or move up before you're ready.

The second was level, and it was the worst problem. Available material tends to cluster at the extremes — children's stories on one side, unadapted literature on the other, with very little in between. Texts are also rarely labelled in a way you can act on, so finding something genuinely at B1 rather than nominally "intermediate" means opening a dozen and abandoning most of them. For the pairs I cared about, there was often nothing at the right level at all.

So the requirement was a text I hadn't seen before, at a level I could actually read aloud without stalling, in the pair I wanted, available today. That is a generation problem rather than a library problem, which is why BiReader writes each story on request rather than serving one from a shelf. Levels map to CEFR from A1 to C1, and length scales with them — roughly 150 words at A1 up to 900 at C1 — so the difficulty is a setting rather than a gamble. The translation sits alongside so you can check meaning without stopping, and the audio exists so you can hear a sentence before reading it aloud yourself.
