Headwind MDM is an open-source Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform purpose-built for Android. It helps companies of any size manage corporate phones, tablets, rugged devices, handheld scanners, kiosks, digital signage, TV boxes, and custom Android hardware from a single web-based admin panel.

Unlike cloud-only MDM tools, Headwind MDM runs on your own infrastructure โ€” including fully air-gapped networks with no internet access. The mobile agent can be signed with platform keys and preinstalled into device firmware, making it ideal for OEMs and custom ROM builds.

The Community edition is free and open-source on GitHub. Premium and Enterprise editions add kiosk mode, unattended remote control, web traffic filtering, lost-device management, Samsung Knox integration, and premium support โ€” all with a one-time perpetual license, not a per-device subscription.

  • interface_complexity
The user interface, while powerful, can be overwhelming and complex for beginners or those not deeply familiar with version control concepts.
  • performance_issues
Occasionally, GitHub may experience downtime or performance issues, which can disrupt workflow and prevent access to repositories temporarily.
  • limited_storage
GitHub imposes limitations on storage space and file size within repositories, which can be restrictive for projects requiring large datasets or binaries.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Headwind MDM and GitHub.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Headwind MDM's answer

IT managers and system administrators managing corporate Android device fleets in retail, logistics, manufacturing, healthcare, field services, and education. Also OEMs and developers building custom Android hardware who need to preinstall MDM into device firmware. Organizations in government, defense, finance, or healthcare with strict data residency requirements that prohibit cloud-based device management.

What makes your product unique?

Headwind MDM's answer

Headwind MDM is the only MDM solution combining three things simultaneously: open-source code, on-premise deployment, and Android specialization. Most competitors are closed-source SaaS products that require cloud connectivity. Headwind MDM runs on your own server โ€” including fully air-gapped networks with no internet access. The mobile agent can be preinstalled into Android firmware via platform keys, making it ideal for OEMs building custom devices. A perpetual one-time license means no per-device subscription costs that grow with your fleet.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Headwind MDM's answer

Three reasons: ownership, cost model, and Android depth.

Ownership: your device data never leaves your servers. No vendor lock-in, no cloud dependency, full source code available on GitHub.

Cost model: Premium edition is a one-time perpetual license at $2,990 for up to 300 devices. No per-device subscription that scales against you as your fleet grows.

Android depth: built exclusively for Android means deeper support for rugged devices, kiosks, barcode scanners, TV boxes, digital signage, and custom firmware than cross-platform MDM tools.

What's the story behind your product?

Headwind MDM's answer

Headwind MDM was created to solve a real problem: enterprise Android device management without vendor lock-in. Most MDM solutions on the market were closed-source, cloud-only, and priced per device โ€” creating dependency and growing costs. The founders built an open-source alternative that IT teams could deploy on their own infrastructure, customize freely, and integrate into custom Android firmware. Since 2017, Headwind MDM has grown to 1,000+ companies worldwide and became a certified Samsung Knox partner.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Headwind MDM's answer

Java (backend web console running on Apache Tomcat), Android SDK (mobile agent), PostgreSQL (database), REST API, Apache 2.0 open-source license. Server runs on Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS). Mobile agent supports Android 6.0 and above.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Headwind MDM's answer

  • Retail and wholesale companies managing field sales devices
  • Logistics and delivery operators with rugged scanner fleets
  • Healthcare organizations with strict data residency requirements
  • Industrial manufacturers using custom Android terminals
  • Government and public sector organizations in air-gapped networks
  • OEMs building custom Android hardware and firmware

However, like any (human) product, the platform has its limits, downsides, and critics. This is why eval and observability ship as a unit, not as separate purchases. agent-eval scores and gates the output โ€” the tiers above, drift, hallucination.
