Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Google Analytics and Shipyard.

What makes your product unique?

Shipyard's answer:

Shipyard deploys in days, not weeks or months.

Shipyard is built for people of all technical backgrounds thanks to no code, open source low code, and full code options. Someone less technical, like a data analyst can deploy and build workflows with Shipyard just as easily as a data engineer who may choose to partially if not fully code within Shipyard.

Support is immediate. Our team is always available, as opposed to open source tools that primarily relies on communities for answers. The delay from the latter can prove to be an issue for many organizations.

You can test and deploy from your local environment in Shipyard, unlike all other orchestrators.

YAML configuration that syncs with drag and drop.

150 and counting open source low code blueprints allowing you to get started faster and not have to start from scratch.

Shipyard's answer:

Lack of complexity, ease of use, and speed.

What's the story behind your product?

Shipyard's answer:

In todayโ€™s data-driven world, the very best data teams are doing more than executing - theyโ€™re playing a critical role in driving business strategy. But theyโ€™re the minority. Our founders, Blake and Eric, learned firsthand why so many data teams are struggling to make the same type of business impact.

In large part, itโ€™s the result of complex and inflexible data tooling. Data practitioners are typically forced to choose between writing their own intricate custom code or relying on low-code. Both options present their own set of tradeoffs and limitations and generally result in โ€œgood enoughโ€ solutions.

Blake and Eric envisioned a better way. They wanted to create a platform that empowers data practitioners with the flexibility to solve problems their way, without compromises. This vision led to the creation of Shipyard, leveraging a pioneering approach known as hybrid code - combining the best of custom, low-code, and open-source methodologies.

Our journey originally began in 2017 with a platform then called Fork Lift, developed for PMG Digital Agency by Blake and Eric. It served notable clients like OpenTable, Travelocity, Sephora, Cirque du Soleil, and Abercrombie & Fitch. In 2020, Fork Lift evolved into Shipyard, launching as an independent business dedicated to providing a platform for data teams that want to help drive increasingly better business outcomes.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Shipyard's answer:

Our primary audience is data engineers, analytics engineers, data analysts, BI analysts, and heads of data/CDOs. We're giving less technical users an effortless DataOps platform without compromising the needs of technical users.

We're a best fit for large/enterprise organizations where flexibility, no compromises, security, and staying ahead of business needs are important.
