The real competitor is DIY. It will take significant spend over the first few years to reach this level of system maturity - security, governance, compliance, audit and auth capabilities.
Compared to the annual cost of a single DevOps or Software Engineer, choosing Backbone if you plan to launch on AWS is a no-brainer.

I work at Encore so I'm biased. We've had a bunch of people migrate over from Heroku in the last couple years, especially after they killed the free tier. Most teams should start with the simplest option that meets their needs, then evolve if necessary.
