Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

EJS
Eloquent JavaScript 5 features
Caviste 4 features
  • Comprehensive Learning Resource
Eloquent JavaScript covers a wide range of topics, from basic syntax to advanced concepts like asynchronous programming and web development. This depth makes it a valuable resource for both beginners and advanced programmers.
  • Interactive Code Examples
The book contains numerous interactive code examples that allow readers to see the effects of their code in real-time. This hands-on approach reinforces learning and helps solidify concepts.
  • Free Online Access
Eloquent JavaScript is available for free online, making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This allows learners from around the world to benefit from its content without financial barriers.
  • Engaging Writing Style
The author, Marijn Haverbeke, writes in an engaging and clear style, making complex topics more understandable and keeping readers interested.
  • Good Balance of Theory and Practice
The book strikes a good balance between theoretical explanations and practical exercises, allowing readers to apply what they have learned immediately.

Possible disadvantages

  • Steep Learning Curve
Some readers may find the book's progression to be rapid, especially if they are complete beginners. The book quickly moves from basic to more complex topics, which can be overwhelming.
  • Lacks Visual Aids
While the text is clear and the code examples are helpful, the book could benefit from more visual aids like diagrams and illustrations to explain complex concepts.
  • Assumes Some Prior Knowledge
Although it's aimed at beginners, the book sometimes assumes that readers have some prior programming experience, which can make it less accessible to absolute novices.
  • Limited Coverage of Latest ES Features
The book may not cover some of the latest features and best practices introduced in newer versions of JavaScript (e.g., ES2019 and beyond), meaning readers might need to supplement their learning with additional resources.
  • Web Development Sections Could Be More Detailed
While the book does touch on web development, the sections on this topic are not as in-depth as some readers might hope. Those looking to get a more thorough grounding in web development may need to consult other sources.
  • Niche focus on wine
The name and category suggest a tool built for wine enthusiasts, cellar owners, or wine sellers rather than a generic inventory app. That focus can mean features suited to wine, such as bottle tracking, tasting notes, and organization. I could not open the site, so please check the exact features yourself.
  • Mobile convenience
Apps in this category usually let you look up or log bottles from your phone, for example while shopping, at a restaurant, or in the cellar. Confirm which platforms (iOS, Android, web) Caviste supports.
  • Better organization than manual methods
A dedicated app can replace spreadsheets or paper notes by keeping your collection, ratings, and notes in one searchable place. That helps avoid forgetting bottles or missing their drinking windows. This is a general benefit of the category, not a verified Caviste feature.
  • Potential for personalized recommendations
Wine apps often offer pairing suggestions, drink-by reminders, or taste-based discovery. If Caviste has these, they could help less experienced users choose bottles with more confidence. Check whether it actually offers them.

Possible disadvantages

  • Unverified feature set
I could not browse cavisteapp.com, so I cannot confirm its features, quality, or how well it works. Treat any pros and cons here as general expectations for this type of app, and check the site, app store reviews, and any demo.
  • Niche audience
An app focused on wine is mainly useful to collectors, enthusiasts, or wine professionals. Casual drinkers may not get enough value from it.
  • Manual data entry effort
Cellar and collection apps usually need time to enter or scan bottles and keep the inventory current. If the app has no barcode or label scanning, or a limited wine database, upkeep may feel tedious.
  • Unknown pricing and possible paywalls
I could not confirm whether Caviste is free, subscription-based, or has premium tiers. Many niche apps put advanced features behind a paywall, so check the pricing before committing.
  • Limited community and ecosystem
Newer or smaller apps often have smaller user communities, less complete wine databases, and fewer integrations than established apps like Vivino or CellarTracker. This could limit the reviews, data accuracy, and export options available to you.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Eloquent JavaScript and Caviste.

What makes your product unique?

Caviste's answer:

Caviste turns a photo into a stocked cellar, then tells you when to open each bottle.

  • The label scan reads the label itself, with no catalogue to match against: estate, cuvée, appellation, region, vintage and grape varieties come back from the photo. When the label keeps the grapes to itself, they are inferred from the appellation.
  • The drinking window is computed on five levels: named estate, appellation (Champagne cuvée tier included), region, grape, then corrected by the vintage. It can be rewritten bottle by bottle.
  • A cellar map drawn as your racks really are, so every bottle has a slot you can find again.
  • A sommelier that only suggests what you own: describe tonight's menu in one sentence and it picks up to three bottles from your own cellar, explains each pairing and tells you which rack to look in.
  • Free CSV import and export, both ways, so the cellar is never locked in.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Caviste's answer:

  • No catalogue dependency. The scan reads the label, so a small grower or an old vintage does not have to exist in someone's database to be recognised.
  • A drinking window you can audit and correct. It is computed rather than looked up, and the app says which level it came from. When someone rewrites a window, that correction is measured against the table, so the table improves from use.
  • Your data leaves as easily as it arrives. CSV export is free, there are no ads and nothing is resold.

Pricing is 2.99 EUR a month or 24.99 EUR a year, and the free tier keeps 30 bottles for as long as the account exists.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Caviste's answer:

Private wine owners with roughly 30 to 500 bottles who have lost track of what they have and when to drink it.

Not professionals: Caviste manages a personal cellar, not a winery or a merchant's stock. In practice that is an enthusiast who buys a few cases a year, keeps them for years, and wants to stop opening bottles too early or too late.

Available in 13 languages, on iPhone and Android.
