The bandwidth can be reduced if readers use the If-None-Match and If-Modified-Since headers when requesting feeds (so if the feed hasn't been updated, the server can return an empty response). I also imagine that as feed readers become more mainstream, you'd start to see more intermediaries for fetching feeds like Superfeedr[1].
