Clustta is an open-source version control, collaboration, and asset management platform built for creative industries like animation, VFX, and game design. Traditional developer tools struggle with massive 3D models and video files, while cloud storage lacks proper versioning. Clustta bridges this gap with an artist-first, visual interface that handles binary assets effortlessly.

Key features include non-destructive checkpoints for instant recovery, local-first performance with fast cloud sync, and efficient chunking to drastically reduce storage needs. Designed to fit existing production pipelines, Clustta helps freelancers and studios collaborate seamlessly, keep files organized, and protect project history without complex workflows.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Clustta and Mega.

What makes your product unique?

Clustta's answer

Clustta merges real version control with the simplicity artists expect from consumer file sharing. Instead of Git's branch/merge model, it uses checkpoints, assignments, and soft locks, so there's nothing to learn beyond save and share. Under the hood it uses content-addressed chunking (FastCDC + Zstandard), so only the changed part of a file is stored and transferred on every save, which matters a lot once assets get large. Projects are self-contained SQLite databases (.clst files) holding both metadata and, for local/self-hosted use, the chunks themselves, so a project stays portable and readable anywhere.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Clustta's answer

Git can't check out a single file without cloning the whole repo, which breaks down with large binary assets. Perforce and SVN handle that but are expensive and not built for artists. Google Drive and Dropbox are easy to use but autosync, which corrupts production files the moment two people touch the same asset. Clustta is built specifically to close that gap: real version control, but with a UI and workflow designed for artists rather than engineers, at a fraction of the cost of other systems.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Clustta's answer

Indie animators, small to mid-sized animation and VFX studios, and technical artists and pipeline TDs who need to version large binary assets without forcing their team through Git. It's also relevant to game developers, video editors, and sound engineers working on collaborative projects with large media files.

What's the story behind your product?

Clustta's answer

Clustta grew out of Eaxum, our own animation studio in Nigeria, over five years of dogfooding on our production pipeline. It started after we studied Blender Studio's pipeline approach and adopted SVN internally, then built a Blender addon called Nagato on top of it. That solved version control for .blend files, but everything else in a production (textures, rigs, storyboards, renders) still needed versioning too. Rather than build a separate plugin for every tool, we built one standalone app to handle it all, which became Clustta.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Clustta's answer

The desktop client is built with Go and Vue 3 via Wails, running cross-platform on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The studio server is self-hostable via Docker, with Cloudflare R2 for object storage. Data is stored in per-project SQLite databases using content-addressed chunk storage.
