Cloudfogger
dupEx

No description of Cloudfogger yet.

Finding duplicates is only half the job. The other half is deciding which copy to delete — because information lives not only inside a file, but also in its name and in the folder it sits in. Delete the wrong identical copy and a date, a place or a name is gone. dupEx combines exact detection...

Analysis

An editorial look at what each product does well and who it suits.

Cloudfogger
dupEx

Overall verdict

  • Cloudfogger was a reputable option for those needing file encryption for cloud storage. However, as of now, the service has been discontinued, and its software is no longer supported or available. Therefore, while Cloudfogger was a good option in its time, it is not suitable for use today given the lack of updates and support.

Why this product is good

  • Cloudfogger was a tool used to encrypt files for cloud storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and others. It was appreciated for its ease of use and ability to encrypt files locally before uploading, ensuring that only encrypted files were stored in the cloud. This approach provided an additional layer of security for users concerned about privacy and unauthorized access to their cloud-stored data.

Recommended for

For those seeking active alternatives, it's recommended to look into other encryption services like Boxcryptor, Cryptomator, or services built into modern cloud storage options that provide similar encryption features. These alternatives offer up-to-date support and continued development, ensuring better security and compatibility with current systems.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Cloudfogger and dupEx.

What makes your product unique?

dupEx's answer:

Its focus on the second half of the job: not just finding duplicates, but choosing safely which copy to delete. Information also lives in file names and folders, so dupEx pairs exact detection (hashing plus optional byte-for-byte verification) with selection rules, protected reference folders and live results that can be acted on while the scan is still running.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

dupEx's answer:

For certainty and safety on Linux: byte-for-byte verification instead of "probably identical", protected reference folders, confirmation before every delete, and a clear view of which files cannot be deleted and why. It integrates with the common Linux file managers, handles network shares and hundreds of thousands of files, and ships for all major package formats. Scanning is free and unlimited; the license is a one-time purchase, no subscription.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

dupEx's answer:

Linux desktop users with large, grown file collections — photos, documents, media archives, backups spread over several drives and NAS shares — and Linux power users who want exact control: byte-for-byte verification, regex selection rules, protected reference folders and network shares. Both want to reclaim space without the risk of deleting the wrong copy.

What's the story behind your product?

dupEx's answer:

It started in February 2026 as a hobby project: a way to compare large files bit by bit. During development, another tool reported two files as duplicates that differed in a single bit — if one copy is damaged, the intact one might be the one that gets deleted. That set the standard: dupEx has to be certain. What began as a tool for personal use grew into a product, tested on 13 Linux distributions, 7 desktop environments and 6 package formats before the stable 1.0.0 release in September 2026.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

dupEx's answer:

A C engine with BLAKE3 hashing, SIMD assembly for the byte-for-byte comparison (SSE2, SSE4.1, AVX2), OpenMP for parallel work and SQLite for the hash cache; libmagic for file-type detection; a GTK4 interface written in Rust (gtk4-rs).
