For writers, developers, and documentation teams, having a dedicated tool to clean up messy Markdown (e.g., from copy-pasted HTML or inconsistent formatting) can significantly speed up content preparation workflows.
  • Web-based accessibility
As a web tool, it likely requires no installation, allowing users to quickly access and use it from any device with a browser, which is convenient for on-the-go editing tasks.
  • Potential for consistent formatting
Automated Markdown cleaning tools help ensure consistent styling and syntax across documents, reducing manual errors and formatting inconsistencies in technical writing or README files.
  • Likely lightweight and fast
Single-purpose tools like this tend to be lightweight, offering quick processing times without the overhead of larger, more complex software suites.

Possible disadvantages of CleanMD.dev

  • Limited information available
Without extensive documentation, reviews, or details about the tool's specific features, algorithms, and capabilities, it's difficult to fully assess its effectiveness or reliability.
  • Uncertain feature set
It's unclear what level of customization or advanced options (e.g., specific Markdown flavor support like GitHub Flavored Markdown) are available, which may limit its usefulness for specialized use cases.
  • Potential privacy concerns
As with many web-based text processing tools, users may have concerns about how their pasted content is handled, stored, or used, especially if the tool processes sensitive or proprietary documentation.
  • Dependency on internet connectivity
Being a web-based tool means it cannot be used offline, which could be a drawback for users who need to clean Markdown files in environments without reliable internet access.
  • Unknown scalability for bulk processing
It's unclear whether the tool supports batch processing of multiple files, which could be a limitation for teams or projects requiring cleanup of large volumes of Markdown documents at once.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing CleanMD.dev and Markdown Web Clipper.

What makes your product unique?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Fidelity and ownership. Code blocks, tables, math, and footnotes survive conversion intact, images are saved next to the file, and everything lands as plain Markdown files on your own disk โ€” a local folder, an Obsidian vault, a Gist, or the clipboard. No account, no cloud, no telemetry. Free and MIT-licensed.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

Honest answer: most clippers convert HTML similarly these days. The differences are in what happens after โ€” this one saves images locally, writes straight into a local folder or Obsidian vault with YAML frontmatter, works without an account, and the optional Pro upgrade is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. If you need mobile capture or a full read-later ecosystem, a hosted service will fit better; if you want your clips as files you own, that's exactly what this is for.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

People who live in Markdown: Obsidian and Logseq users, developers, researchers, and anyone piping web content into LLMs โ€” clipping a selection as Markdown is far more token-efficient than screenshots.

What's the story behind your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

I built it because every clipper I tried either mangled code blocks and tables or wanted to keep my articles in its cloud. After Pocket shut down and MarkDownload disappeared in Chrome's Manifest V2 purge, "your notes should be plain files you own" stopped being a preference and became a requirement. It's open source (MIT) and the core is free forever.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Markdown Web Clipper's answer:

TypeScript and React on Manifest V3, built with WXT. Extraction uses Defuddle, HTMLโ†’Markdown conversion is Turndown with GFM plus math/footnote handling, and the built-in editor is CodeMirror 6. Conversion runs entirely in your browser โ€” no server involved.
