Brogue features and specs

  • Engaging Gameplay
Brogue offers challenging and engaging gameplay by incorporating classic roguelike elements such as turn-based action, procedural generation, and permadeath, which require strategic thinking and careful decision-making.
  • Unique Visual Style
The game stands out with its ASCII art graphics, appealing to players who enjoy a retro aesthetic and want to focus more on gameplay mechanics rather than high-end visuals.
  • Replayability
Due to its procedural generation of levels, Brogue offers high replayability as players encounter new challenges, environments, and enemy placements each time they start a new game.
  • Rich Tactical Depth
Brogue provides a rich tactical experience with various tools, potions, and weapons that offer multiple ways to approach challenges, fostering creativity and experimentation among players.
  • Community and Support
The game has an active community of players and developers who provide support, share tips, and contribute to ongoing development and improvements in the game.

Possible disadvantages of Brogue

  • Steep Learning Curve
New players may find the game intimidating due to its complexity and lack of in-game tutorials, leading to a potentially frustrating initial experience.
  • No Modern Graphics
The ASCII art graphics, while unique, might not appeal to all players, especially those who prefer more modern visuals, which could impact their immersion in the game.
  • Permadeath Frustration
The permadeath mechanic can be frustrating for some players, as losing all progress after a mistake or unfortunate event can feel punishing.
  • Limited Platforms
Brogue is primarily available on desktop platforms, which might limit accessibility for players who prefer gaming on mobile devices or consoles.
  • Niche Audience
The game's classic roguelike style caters to a niche audience, potentially limiting its appeal to a broader gaming demographic.

  • The Story of Rogue
I love any opportunity to suggest people try out Brogue. It was developed with the idea "What would have happened if development continued on Rogue?" • Show HN: Asterogue, my sci-fi roguelike, is now playable on the web
I enjoyed it, though for my taste it was maybe a little too simplistic and easy. The original rogue is before my time, but at one point I got very hooked on [brogue](https://sites.google.com/site/broguegame/) and this reminded me very much of that. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Dijkstra Maps Visualized
I believe the original author of most of this content was Brian Walker, creator of brogue, which uses Dijkstra maps to great effect. In my opinion, brogue is the greatest 'modern' traditional roguelike. The Ground Gives Way and Brogue(follow the link to the Community Edition) are, in my opinion, the best introductions to traditional roguelikes out there. Source: almost 4 years ago
  • Hades is the best-designed roguelike I've ever played
To start, I would recommend Brogue or The Ground Gives Way. Both are very simplified and have an accessible, modern approach. Tales of Maj'Eyal, while more complex, also a more modern game feel to it that might be appealing. There are two main types of roguelike gameplay: dungeon delvers, and expansive open worlds. Both Brogue and TGGW are the former, so it's easy to jump into a game, get the basic idea, and get... Source: almost 4 years ago
