  • First version of nethack with a bestiary?
Prior to 3.1.x the dat subdirectory didn't exist yet but data.base was present somewhere, possibly in the src subdirectory instead. I don't know whether it goes as far back as hack 1.x or even nethack 2.x. The source code for a bunch of old versions is present at https://nethackwiki.com/ but I'm not sure whether the data files are all there too. The source code for the most recent released version (3.6.7) is... Source: 10 months ago
  • Is there a discord?
I am not sure what extra benefits the Steam version has, but the game is available for free either as download on nethack.org, or to play online at something like alt.org/nethack or hardfought.org. Source: 10 months ago
  • REMINDER: You only need two people to play D&D
You don't even need two people to play D&D, Nethack is great! Source: 11 months ago

  • Went to see the video game exhibit at the NY MOMA
It was discussed here last fall, when the home page for nethack.org was updated to mention it. The blurb includes a few other tiny screen shots and says the exhibit is scheduled to be open until mid-July. Source: about 1 year ago

  • Dijkstra Maps Visualized
I believe the original author of most of this content was Brian Walker, creator of brogue, which uses Dijkstra maps to great effect. In my opinion, brogue is the greatest 'modern' traditional roguelike. The Ground Gives Way and Brogue(follow the link to the Community Edition) are, in my opinion, the best introductions to traditional roguelikes out there. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Hades is the best-designed roguelike I've ever played
To start, I would recommend Brogue or The Ground Gives Way. Both are very simplified and have an accessible, modern approach. Tales of Maj'Eyal, while more complex, also a more modern game feel to it that might be appealing. There are two main types of roguelike gameplay: dungeon delvers, and expansive open worlds. Both Brogue and TGGW are the former, so it's easy to jump into a game, get the basic idea, and get... Source: over 1 year ago
  • Shovel Knight Dig - Review Thread
Personally, I very much recommend Brogue (its subreddit). It's a difficult game, but it is free and will certainly scratch that problemsolve-itch. Say, you are on a stroll alongside a cliff, and you come across a nasty group of spearwielding goblins, backed up by priests that cover them in magical shields? This encounter is not a nut that you can crack by engaging them head on, as you only have a dagger as of now.... Source: over 1 year ago
  • Quick question regarding copyright and old roguelikes!
Great news! For Brogue, [Brian Walker’s email](penderprime@gmail.com) is public so you can reach out to him there to ask if he’s cool with it. Source: over 1 year ago
