As answered by people managing Bench.co and HelloLedger.
HelloLedger's answer:
Because it does less. Most bookkeeping tools are built for companies with staff — payroll, approval workflows, seats to manage. If you're the only person in the business, you're paying for a finance department you don't have and navigating an interface designed around it. HelloLedger covers what a one-person business actually needs and leaves out the rest on purpose.
HelloLedger's answer:
Two things. It ships an MCP server, so you connect your own Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions against your live books — no built-in chatbot, no AI surcharge, and no bet on which model wins. And every customer gets their own container and their own database rather than sharing a table with a tenant ID column, so isolation is architectural rather than a query filter.
HelloLedger's answer:
People running a business by themselves — freelancers, contractors, consultants, and sole proprietors. Typically someone who has outgrown a spreadsheet but finds QuickBooks or Xero oversized for what they're doing. No employees, no approval chains, no finance team.
HelloLedger's answer:
I was looking for bookkeeping software for a one-person business and everything I tried fell into one of two camps: built for companies much larger than mine, or so stripped down it couldn't handle sales tax properly. Nothing sat in the middle. The AI additions I saw were chatbots stapled onto software designed years before any of it existed. I wanted something simpler, built from the start to work with the AI tools people already use rather than having it retrofitted.
