Possible disadvantages

  • Limited Customer Support
Wave mainly offers customer support through email and self-help resources. Live chat and phone support are limited, which may be a drawback for some users.
  • Limited Integrations
Wave offers fewer third-party integrations compared to some of its competitors, which might limit its functionality for businesses that rely on specific tools.
  • Not Ideal for Large Businesses
The platform is tailored for small businesses and freelancers. Larger businesses may find the features and scalability inadequate for their needs.
  • Payroll Service Limitations
The payroll service is only available in the United States and Canada, which can be a significant limitation for international businesses.
  • No Inventory Management
Wave lacks built-in inventory management features, which might be a necessary functionality for businesses that manage physical products.
  • Bank Connection
Link your bank through Plaid and have transactions import automatically.
  • Automatic Categorization
Set rules once and transactions sort themselves as they arrive.
  • Retroactive rules
New rules apply backwards to existing transactions, so onboarding with a year of history isn't a manual cleanup job.
  • Invoicing
Create, send, and track invoices, with payments applied against them.
  • Sales tax tracking
Track sales tax on every line item and see what's owed for the period.
  • Financial Reports
Profit and loss, balance sheet, general ledger, trial balance, and AR aging.
  • Receipt Matching
Match receipts to bank transactions so expenses are substantiated.
  • Bring your own AI
An MCP server lets you connect Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions against your live books. No built-in chatbot and no AI surcharge.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Wave Financial and HelloLedger.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

HelloLedger's answer:

Because it does less. Most bookkeeping tools are built for companies with staff — payroll, approval workflows, seats to manage. If you're the only person in the business, you're paying for a finance department you don't have and navigating an interface designed around it. HelloLedger covers what a one-person business actually needs and leaves out the rest on purpose.

What makes your product unique?

HelloLedger's answer:

Two things. It ships an MCP server, so you connect your own Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions against your live books — no built-in chatbot, no AI surcharge, and no bet on which model wins. And every customer gets their own container and their own database rather than sharing a table with a tenant ID column, so isolation is architectural rather than a query filter.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

HelloLedger's answer:

People running a business by themselves — freelancers, contractors, consultants, and sole proprietors. Typically someone who has outgrown a spreadsheet but finds QuickBooks or Xero oversized for what they're doing. No employees, no approval chains, no finance team.

What's the story behind your product?

HelloLedger's answer:

I was looking for bookkeeping software for a one-person business and everything I tried fell into one of two camps: built for companies much larger than mine, or so stripped down it couldn't handle sales tax properly. Nothing sat in the middle. The AI additions I saw were chatbots stapled onto software designed years before any of it existed. I wanted something simpler, built from the start to work with the AI tools people already use rather than having it retrofitted.
