Analysis of Vim Python IDE

Overall verdict

  • Vim configured as a Python IDE (typically via plugins like coc.nvim, YouCompleteMe, ALE, jedi-vim, or NERDTree combined with configurations found in various GitHub repositories) is a solid choice for developers who value speed, keyboard-driven workflows, and deep customization, though it requires more setup effort than out-of-the-box IDEs like PyCharm or VS Code.

Why this product is good

  • Extremely lightweight and fast, even on older or resource-constrained hardware
  • Highly customizable through plugins (linting, autocompletion, debugging, git integration)
  • Keyboard-centric workflow enables very efficient editing once mastered
  • Works seamlessly over SSH and in terminal-only environments, great for remote server work
  • Free and open-source with a massive ecosystem of community-maintained configs and plugins
  • Consistent editing experience across many languages, not just Python

Recommended for

  • Experienced developers comfortable with the Vim/Neovim modal editing paradigm
  • Users who frequently work in terminal-only or remote/SSH environments
  • Developers who want a minimal, distraction-free coding environment
  • Engineers who enjoy building and maintaining their own custom tooling/config
  • Power users who prioritize speed and efficiency over GUI convenience
  • Those already familiar with Vim motions looking to extend it into a full Python dev environment

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Avoyd and Vim Python IDE.

What's the story behind your product?

Avoyd's answer

Avoyd started out in 1999 as a multiplayer first person shooter with a fully modifiable voxel world, arguably the first such type of game. Many of our early players were mainly interested in building structures with our game, and so when we came back to making a modern version of Avoyd we decided to put a strong focus on the Voxel Editor.

What makes your product unique?

Avoyd's answer

Avoyd Voxel Editor supports extremely large voxel worlds. It can import and renders entire Minecraft worlds as voxels.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Avoyd's answer

Minecraft map makers and modders, along with voxel artists who want to assemble and render large scenes or export to mesh for use in Games or 3D content tools with physically based materials.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Avoyd's answer

Avoyd runs on our in-house voxel game engine written in C++ using:

  • OpenGL (and soon Vulkan).
  • GLFW for the platform windowing layer.
  • Dear ImGui for the graphical user interface.
  • enkiTS our open source multithreaded task system.
  • Runtime Compiled C++ a C++ programming technique we developed for iterative development.

For a full list of technologies used in Avoyd see our FAQ.

Voxels in Avoyd are compressed with our proprietary enkiOT voxel octree technology, which is also used for ray casting. The enkiOT library is used in the Mercuna AI 3D Pathfinding middleware and has been shipped in a number of AAA titles over the years.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?
