I don’t use Google Drive all that much, but if the issue is with the Mac client maybe you could look at a third party client such as Mountain Duck or CloudMounter. If ForkLift is also problematic maybe those will also not let performant, but possibly worth a try. Source: over 3 years ago
On that note, I wonder if you could make do with something like Cloud Mounter. I've used it on mac ( but it also has a windows version), and it's pretty great... But due to deeply rooted fears when it comes to working with large files directly from a network drive (especially when it's not through a local network), I've only used it in certain situations and can't straight up recommend it for you... Alternatively you could use a 3rd-party client, like CloudMounter (makes your OneDrive behave like a flash drive), Transmit (generic file manager that can connect to a lot of servers), or just the OneDrive web app. The benefit of all 3 over the official app being that it's not Microsoft and it doesn't have to sync stuff down ;). Yup, I'm currently experimenting with using an AWS bucket alongside [CloudMounter](https://cloudmounter.net) to create an Archive disk for things I don't really need day-to-day, but would like to hang onto. I'm currently not backing that data up, though. It's not critical, and the chances of AWS losing it are low enough that I'm not too worried. The biggest risk would be myself accidentally deleting it.
