I have been using "personaljournal" which is based on "writefreely" but PJ does not seem to allow comments on blog posts... is there a fediverse blog system allowing comments?

Vultr Micro.blog WordPress.com
  1. 1
VULTR Global Cloud Hosting - Brilliantly Fast SSD VPS Cloud Servers. 100% KVM Virtualization
You can go for a small VPS at $4 USD at vultr.com with a one click deployment of Wordpress there. That's pretty cheap for making your own federated website.

  2. Social network for indie blogs
My recommendation is to go to https://micro.blog and do the trial offer there and see if you like it then pay US$5/month afterwards. You'd get everything you're asking for, plus the head admin is VERY responsive on and will answer all questions as he is very close to both the Indieweb and ActivityPub projects himself.

  3. Create a free website or build a blog with ease on WordPress.com. Dozens of free, customizable, mobile-ready designs and themes. Free hosting and support.
If you go open source its another kind of issue. I would also consider use of cross-posting to wordpress.com and mastodon etc... Then link your main write freely blog. I never even heard of it before and you have me interested in it as I am an author too, so it obviously works to "hub" your stuff if you see what I mean.
