    There is already Ubport https://ubports.com/ project that is supporting Ubuntu for smartphones and guides you to compile debian with all the phone functionalities. Some parts of modem abstraction layer on the Linux (below radio Interface layer) will still be not openesource and I would say it won't be easy to get this source. Source: about 4 years ago

    How long are you looking to keep the device? OpenWRT has a track record of supporting devices for a very long time, so that's something to take into consideration. I have not seen a published EOL for firewalla devices, which can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. Firewalla is open source, but support after EOL depends on community inertia.
