ActiveWorlds, BowieWorld, There, Cloud Party, OpenSimulator and Second Life would have taught Meta about metaverse successes and failures - and that you don't necessarily need VR to have an immersive experience - but it doesn't look like they did any research. Thing is, Second Life has been around as a MMORPG for 19 years, and its graphics and world building are a gazillion times better than the joke shown above. It's not VR, but I imagine it wouldn't take that much to tweak it with modern tech to be so.
