Is this using Jolla's Android AppSupport? https://jolla.com/ I use a Sailfish OS phone and it works amazingly well. I know they have been pushing hard into the auto industry after pulling out of Russia because of the war. I would be very pleased if Mercedes is helping fund Jolla. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
Anybody got any intel on why jolla.com is down? I purchased the Sailfish OS licence for Xperia 10 ii but the links to installing instructions are nowhere to be found. Source: about 3 years ago
There was one but people wouldn't "put their money where their mouth is". The Jolla phone was made by ex-MeeGo/Maemo devs from Nokia, but nobody bought them. Now they're focusing on just the OS and they don't make any full fledged devices: https://jolla.com/. - Source: Hacker News / about 4 years ago
Sailfish OS is mobile Linux and can run on smartphones. I didn't personally use it but the website claims to in on the Sony Xperia 10 II from 2020. It costs $50, though. https://jolla.com. - Source: Hacker News / about 4 years ago
Sailfish OS, a notable competitor in the mobile operating systems market, continues to captivate a niche audience, despite being overshadowed by more mainstream options like Android. Launched by Jolla Ltd. in 2013, Sailfish OS emerged from the remnants of Nokia's MeeGo project, carving out a legacy of resilience and innovation. Built on a Linux foundation, it integrates various open-source projects, offering a distinct alternative to Android with the capability to run Android applications through a dedicated App Support solution.
Public perception of Sailfish OS is a mixture of admiration for its innovative approach and frustration surrounding accessibility and market positioning. Earning its stripes as one of the oldest Android alternatives, it has sustained a degree of user loyalty, particularly among those who appreciate Linux-based systems and open-source initiatives. Its ability to run Android apps is often highlighted as a critical selling point, broadening its appeal to users who value access to a wide array of applications while remaining outside the conventional Android ecosystem.
Discussions in online forums and articles reveal a dedicated but modest fanbase, echoing sentiments that the operating system fulfills specific needs for privacy-conscious users and supporters of open-source software. However, its overall market impact remains constrained by several factors. One primary concern is the loss of potential market presence due to the abandonment of hardware production, as Jolla opted to focus exclusively on software development after initial Jolla phones experienced limited commercial success. This strategic shift has left Sailfish OS reliant on partnerships with other manufacturers, such as Sony, to offer compatible devices.
Additionally, Sailfish OS faces challenges regarding its digital infrastructure. Instances of its website downtime have disrupted access to critical installation instructions, leading to user frustration. Such disruptions could hinder adoption and limit the operating system's reach and growth potential. However, Jolla's explorations into broader industries, including automotive sectors, signify proactive efforts to diversify and solidify its market resilience.
The overarching narrative surrounding Sailfish OS encapsulates both the virtues of an alternative mobile experience and the constraints of operating within a competitive and rapidly evolving industry. By continuing to develop its unique selling propositions, such as Android app compatibility and exploration into new industry applications, Sailfish OS holds potential to sustain its niche while striving to expand its influence and user base.
