  • What do you feel you are losing interest in as you grow older?
This is not an ad: I've seen a few YouTube creators who are into film (Broey Deschanel is an example) who are sponsored by a platform called Mubi: https://mubi.com/. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Netflix Loses 1M Users in Spain over Password Policing
Mubi (https://mubi.com/) is nice. You donโ€™t get a huge catalogue but they cycle it very regularly with varying thematic focus and showcase a mix of old movies and new art releases. It feels a bit like a cinema club. I recommend. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
  • Netflix rolls out new fees for password sharing in Canada
I recommend Mubi. Just quality stuff, opposite of Netflix. https://mubi.com/. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Signed up for a month of Mubi, any great films I'm missing from my watchlist?
Well you can go to mubi.com and sign up directly with them. I did this with BFI and tried to do it with Shudder but for BFI their web player wasn't as good as Prime and with Shudder I literally couldn't get the website to accept any of my cards. So now, if there is an Amazon Channel available for a service, I tend to go via that for ease. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Mundane Films
Not a specific movie, but if you go onto mubi.com and browse there seems to be a lot of movies like this up your alley. I'm not crazy about mundane films but there seems to be a lot of simple life indie movies there. Source: almost 4 years ago
  • mubi's content download
Is there any way to get movies from mubi.com I have the subscription but I want to save some movies for later watching purpose how to do that? Tried OBS, nothing but black screen. anyone? Source: about 4 years ago
  • I desperately need movie recommendations. Fair warning, I've watched tons of movies. So, hit me with your best shot.
Check out their website too. They offer a 7-day free trial. https://mubi.com. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Ask HN: Are the 2020s the decade of peak homogenisation?
If you're looking at the dominant platforms or artists then yes, of course, things look the same. But there is an infinite amount of diversity if you look around. For example if you dislike Netflix / Disney approach, you have platforms such as MUBI (https://mubi.com/) where you have handpicked selections of worldwide movies, with lot of more artsy and unusual styles. • What are some 90s terms that are no longer used today?
I used to subscribe to this curated streaming service and it's pretty good. Just one movie added per day, if I remember correctly: https://mubi.com/. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Fellow Aussies, what is your favourite streaming service & why?
MUBI I just learned about it today. It focuses on independent, classic and foreign films. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Psychedelics have eroded my interest in most movies, TV shows, comedies, and performative content
I see. Ideally the best films should force you to to confront your emotions rather than serving as a distraction. To start I would recommend trying MUBI, a streaming service that curates films chosen for their unique vision and artistic value, including independent films as well as lesser-known classics. • Criterion Channel equivalent?
Same as in foreign art films? Filmbox Arthouse (which also has a channel on SkyCable) and Mubi lang. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Mubi Free Trial
I just got a 60-day free trial of Mubi, and Iโ€™m loving it so far. For the art house film lover, itโ€™s perfect. Just thought I should share the love. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Found it in its FULL GLORY
Link to MUBI, although pretty sure CinemaTyler's got a discount code if you're into that - but I probably shouldn't link it here to avoid outright shilling. Source: almost 5 years ago

The Gleaners, 1999 by French film directing legend Agnes Varda. She follows various people who live from what others discard. In addition to the criterion channel, already mentioned, try MUBI [1]. Itโ€™s a cinephileโ€™s dream: a film discovery nearly everyday while also curating the great directors. [1] https://mubi.com/. - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago

Congratulations u/Halmesn, good job! I think it is a good project, you can offer your services to mubi.com or other streaming companies. I see you replicated very well the functionality. It's not perfect, but it works, I like that. But the most important thing, I envy your passion, in a good way of course. I wish I have 1% of your determination now I'm a senior dev :). Thanks for sharing this. Source: about 5 years ago
  • I wish original ideas get made more rather than reboots or sequesl or remakes or prequels.
MUBI has lots of new curated films, while Criterion Channel has some. So does Shudder. These platforms will require you to perhaps watch something outside of your comfort zone, but that's ok. Original filmmaking is often meant to be challenging, even provocative. Source: about 5 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of MUBI

MUBI, an online streaming service, has carved a distinct niche in the crowded field of digital film platforms. Unlike mainstream competitors such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, MUBI focuses on offering a curated selection of films, often spotlighting independent, classic, and foreign cinema that caters to an audience with a penchant for art-house films. The service has garnered both praise and criticism, illuminating the diverse public opinion that surrounds it.

At the core of MUBI's appeal is its commitment to cinematic curation. The platform adds a new film every day while simultaneously retiring an older title, thus providing a dynamic but limited catalog that defies the โ€œinfinite scrollโ€ experience typical of many streaming services. This cycling approach is appreciated for its emphasis on quality over quantity, offering films that are often described as unique, artistic, and evocative of a cinema club environment. MUBI excels in celebrating films with artistic merit, consistently earning recommendations from film enthusiasts who prioritize content that provokes thought and emotion.

However, MUBI is not without its challenges. The limited quantity of available films at any given time has been cited as a disadvantage, particularly for users who prefer to maintain extensive personal watchlists. This aspect of MUBI might deter those with sprawling schedules or those who favor delayed viewing options. Additionally, MUBIโ€™s relatively higher subscription cost, when compared to some competitors, sparks debate over its value proposition, especially in contrast to a previous contender like FilmStruck.

Moreover, the platform's curated approach has sometimes been perceived as elitist, a sentiment echoed following a recent advertising misstep that invited criticism of its marketing tone. MUBI has addressed these concerns, but such feedback may influence potential subscribers who seek a more inclusive experience.

Despite these critiques, the frequent rotation of thematically diverse films continues to attract cinephiles. MUBI is celebrated for providing a refuge from the mainstream emphasis on blockbuster films, offeringโ€”a connoisseurโ€™s collection that champions lesser-known classics and emerging filmmakers. The platform is often recommended as a haven for those disillusioned with the homogeneity seen on larger streaming services.

In summary, while MUBI may not suit viewers in search of vast selections and ubiquitous content, its curated approach has won the favor of those looking for an alternative to the predominant mainstream platforms. Its appeal lies in the confluence of quality curation and artistic expression, serving as a testament to the enduring allure of diverse and independent cinema amidst an ever-expanding digital landscape. As the streaming industry evolves, MUBIโ€™s challenge will be to maintain its unique identity while broadening its accessibility and appeal.
