I know for me there is one though it is not specifically "core" but kind of is in a way when you are using a desktop...namely email of all things. Gnome comes with the abomination that is Geary and that thing is way too under powered. For me, I would love it if something like Mailspring (https://getmailspring.com/) was packaged up and made it in as the default email client in the new and improved DE. Modern take... Summary of the public mentions of Mailspring

Mailspring, a contemporary email client, has steadily gained attention as an alternative to traditional email applications like Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook. This email client, known for its modern design and innovative features, aims to enhance the user experience by offering a robust suite of functionalities often demanded by both casual and professional users. Here's a concise overview of the public opinion surrounding Mailspring, derived from various recent mentions and discussions across the software community.

Features and Functionalities

One of Mailspring's standout features is its activity tracking capability, which notifies users when their emails are read. This is complemented by link tracking, allowing users to monitor engagement with their shared links. Additionally, Mailspring's ability to detect the language being used and perform automatic spellcheck is highly regarded, demonstrating the clientโ€™s intelligence and attention to user preferences.

Mailspring also supports multiple accounts and includes functionalities like read receipts and email translations. The "undo send" feature offers added convenience, fulfilling a critical need for many users who might change their minds immediately after sending an email.

User Interface and Performance

A consistent theme among user reviews is appreciation for Mailspring's modern and clean user interface. Built using Electron for the UI with a C++ sync engine, Mailspring is recognized for its speed and efficiency, dispelling concerns often associated with Electron-based applications. The customization options available allow users to tailor their experience, making it appealing to those who value personalization in their software tools.

Open-Source and Community Support

Mailspring is open-source, which resonates well with the software community, particularly among Linux users. Its open-source nature combined with active updates provides a sense of longevity and reliability, attracting users looking for a future-proof email solution. Some users noted their transition to Mailspring from Nylas, valuing its return to an open-source model after Nylas went closed source.

Comparisons with Competitors

Mailspring is often compared to other email clients such as Thunderbird. Users have noted that while Thunderbirdโ€™s interface can appear cluttered, Mailspring offers a more minimalist and visually appealing alternative. Features considered overkill or too minimal in other clients like Geary also contribute to Mailspringโ€™s positioning as a balanced option.

Users have also highlighted its cross-platform design, making it versatile across different operating systems like Windows and Linux. This adaptability, along with a freemium model offering a premium subscription for cloud-based features, provides flexibility that is praised in various discussions.

Areas of Improvement

While generally well-received, Mailspring does face some scrutiny regarding its reliance on modern web technologies like Electron, which might not satisfy all users. Furthermore, certain features such as full integration with calendar applications or advanced certificate support like S/MIME could provide additional value to potential adopters who prioritize these aspects.

Overall, Mailspring emerges as a capable and stylish alternative in the domain of email clients, appealing to those who seek an open-source solution with a blend of traditional functionality and modern aesthetics. Its robust feature set combined with an engaging interface positions it as a strong contender in the competitive landscape of email productivity tools.
