LM Studio[0] is the best "i'm new here and what is this!?" tool for dipping your toes in the water. If the model supports "vision" or "sound", that tool makes it relatively painless to take your input file + text and feed it to the model. If you're running LLMs locally, you've probably used Ollama or LM Studio. They're both excellent tools, but I hit some limitations. LM Studio is primarily a desktop app that can't run truly headless, while Ollama requires SSH-ing into your server every time you want to switch models or adjust parameters. - Source: dev.to / 27 days ago
LM Studio 0.3.17 introduced Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, revolutionizing how we can extend local AI models with external capabilities. This guide walks through setting up the Docker MCP Toolkit with LM Studio, enabling your local models to access 176+ tools including web search, GitHub operations, database management, and web scraping. - Source: dev.to / 29 days ago
The real breakthrough is that Codex also supports open-source, self-hosted models. With the --oss flag or a configured profile, you can run inference locally through providers like Ollama, LM Studio, or MLX. - Source: dev.to / 30 days ago

So FYI to any one on mac, the easiest way to run these models right now is using LM Studio (https://lmstudio.ai/), its free. You just search for the model, usually 3rd party groups mlx-community or lmstudio-community have mlx versions within a day or 2 of releases. I go for the 8-bit quantizations (4-bit faster, but quality drops). You can also convert to mlx yourself... Once you have it running on LM studio, you... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
Https://lmstudio.ai/ Keep in mind if you run it at the full 262144 tokens of context youll need ~65gb of ram. It's pretty good for summaries etc, can even make simple index.html sites if you're teaching students but it can't really vibecode in my opinion. However for local automation tasks like summarizing your emails, or home automation or whatever it is excellent. It's crazy that we're at this point now. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
Thanks openai for being open ;) Surprised there are no official MLX versions and only one mention of MLX in this thread. Your organization may use public models like those deployed on OpenAI, instanced / dedicated models hosted on a service like Azure, or your team may self-host models using something like Ollama or LM Studio. Your team could even use a combination of these by specifying multiple model providers. - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
LM Studio provides a versatile environment for fine-tuning, deploying, and using language models. Ideal for developers and researchers, it supports running large language models on local hardware, making it a strong choice for custom model training and deployment without relying on cloud-based solutions. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
I would recommend just trying it out! (as long as you have the disk space for a few models). llama.cpp[0] is pretty easy to download and build and has good support for M-series Macbook Airs. I usually just use LMStudio[1] though - it's got a nice and easy-to-use interface that looks like the ChatGPT or Claude webpage, and you can search for and download models from within the program. LMStudio would be the easiest... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
For organizations wanting extreme control, a model can be deployed and hosted on network so your data never leaves your premises. Technologies like Ollama and LM Studio allow you to run LLMs on your own devices for free, though these do not typically provide access to some of the more recent commercial models. - Source: dev.to / 5 months ago
If youโre running it locally, try LM Studio or Ollama + chat UI for instant frontend hooks. - Source: dev.to / 5 months ago

I just started self hosting as well on my local machine, been using https://lmstudio.ai/ Locally for now. I think the 32b models are actually good enough that I might stop paying for ChatGPT plus and Claude. I get around 20 tok/second on my m3 and I can get 100 tok/second on smaller models or quantized. 80-100 tok/second is the best for interactive usage if you go above that you basically canโt read as fast as it... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
