I prefer Kodi: https://kodi.tv/ It is free and open sourced and won't use DRM or phone home on you. Nothing comes out on DVD anymore, everything is Video Streaming paid per month or year. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago

  • Ask HN: Flac/MP3 listeners: How do you store/play your music?
Honestly? I use https://beets.io/ to organise all my FLAC on my NAS. I expose the /Music directory over NFC. I use https://kodi.tv/ to stream music to my amp. I manually pick the album I want to listen to. Kodi also has a fairly reasonable web UI. Keep it simple. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago

Do yourself a favor, get a shitty PC or raspberry pi, plug it into your TV, and install Kodi on it. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Question on Virtual PCs
Kodi sounds like what you're describing. You connect it to a tv and it can play media from your network, or use add-ons for internet streaming. I'm not sure if it includes the most popular streaming services, but I suppose you could use a browser for those. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Hardware acceleration on old laptop CPU?
For example, the Jellyfin AndroidTV app wonโ€™t direct play a lot of my media so it has to transcode. So I now use the Jellyfin for Kodi Addon on Kodi and Iโ€™ve never had to transcode. Source: about 3 years ago

  • Flexible media player/server?
Kodi may work, it creates an internal database, can fetch metadata and maintain it, as well as acting as a server (if you enable the feature). Source: over 3 years ago
  • Jellyfin on a Android Tablet
If you have your media "hosted" locally (right on the tablet); I wouldn't bother with a service-dependent solution like Jellyfin or Plex. I used Kodi pretty exclusively for that type of thing when I had media stored on my device, and never had a complaint. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Kodi does not start on Firestick 4K Max
I updated one stick to Kodi 20 a few weeks ago but it did the same thing so I went back and reinstalled to 19.5 but I am still getting the same issue. It seems to be doing the same thing on all 3 sticks. All three are installed independently without any copying over of configs/settings. All installs downloaded directly from kodi.tv website. Then install Kodi on your Xbox. Kodi is a media manager that plays pretty much any video/music possible. Then you point kodi to your external drive as a media source. If you follow kodi's naming conventions for your file names, it'll automatically pull everything from title to banner to ratings to description. Source: over 3 years ago

I'm having similar issue. Uninstalled, removed source, turned off windows firewall, fresh install of Kodi from kodi.tv and other things working but not the trusty old Crew. Google play store only has 19.3 and that will not change. You must download the apk from kodi.tv and install it on your tv. But if it will help, that is another question. I advise to change advancedsettings.xml to extend the video cache. Source: over 3 years ago

Being a media player, you can simply download the app from their website kodi.tv and install it. I would recommend their latest stable release V19.5 (Matrix). Summary of the public mentions of Kodi

Kodi, an open-source media player originally designed as the Xbox Media Center, has garnered mixed public opinion throughout its evolution. Serving as a versatile platform for organizing and streaming media, Kodi remains a popular choice among technically inclined users but poses challenges to novices. Hereโ€™s a comprehensive look at the public sentiment surrounding Kodi:

Strengths:

  1. Open-Source Flexibility: A major selling point of Kodi is its open-source nature, which allows users to modify and enhance its capabilities through add-ons and plugins. This feature offers a high degree of customization, catering especially to power users who enjoy tweaking and optimizing their media experience.

  2. Extensive Media Support: Kodi supports a wide range of media formats and is praised for its ability to play almost any video or audio file. It also offers comprehensive support for subtitles, noise reduction, playlists, video capturing, and audio filtering.

  3. Cross-Platform Compatibility: Kodi excels in being multi-platform, running on Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, Android, and other lesser-known operating systems. This makes it a versatile tool for varied user environments.

  4. Add-On Ecosystem: Users appreciate the expansive ecosystem of third-party add-ons, which extend Kodiโ€™s functionality to include features like live TV streaming, metadata fetching, and internet streaming services integration.

  5. Community and Documentation: For those willing to delve into technical setups, Kodi offers a robust community and documentation, reducing the anxiety associated with its initial complexity.

Weaknesses:

  1. Complex Setup for Beginners: Despite its strengths, Kodi's out-of-the-box experience is often seen as lacking. Initial configurations and the need for multiple add-ons to reach full functionality can be daunting for new users.

  2. Manual Metadata Management: While competitors like Plex automatically retrieve metadata, Kodi requires manual add-ons for metadata enrichment, which can be cumbersome if users desire detailed information such as cast and ratings.

  3. Legal and Copyright Concerns: Public opinion is occasionally marred by concerns over the legality of content streamed through Kodi, particularly related to add-ons that might inadvertently or intentionally breach copyright laws.

  4. Performance on Certain Devices: While Kodi is technically versatile, its performance can vary across devices, with certain users reporting instability or crashes, especially with newer or pre-release versions of the software.

  5. Maintenance and Updates: Regular updates to core and add-on components are necessary to maintain functionality. However, this frequent updating can break existing setups, causing inconvenience to users who rely on specific add-ons.

Conclusion:

Kodi remains a prominent contender in the media player and streaming space, praised for its customization and wide-ranging capabilities. However, it requires a substantial investment in time and technical proficiency, rendering it less suitable for casual or beginner users. As a result, users seeking a more streamlined and easy-to-use experience might gravitate towards alternatives like Plex or VLC, which offer fewer set-up hurdles. Meanwhile, Kodi maintains its allure for tech-savvy users who can leverage its full potential through customization and community support.
