  • Can SGI’s Enthusiast Community Bring IRIX Back to Life?
People are still actively working on Illumos. The last change was yesterday morning. * https://illumos.org People are still actively working on MirBSD. There's a CVS commit account that can be followed on the FediVerse. * http://www.mirbsd.org It's DragonFly BSD, not Dragon BSD, and the irony of that is that you missed FreeBSD, which is of course still going. * https://dragonflybsd.org * https://freebsd.org As... - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
  • Linux distributions' relative popularity over time (by Distrowatch hits)
Its successor is still out there: Illumos. Though it seems to be mainly focused on backwards compatibility for existing custom applications as it still enforces things like an 8 character username limit. Source: about 1 year ago
  • There are literally no reasons to choose an iPhone over an Android smartphone
By contrast, if you replaced the usage share of Windows with that FreeBSD you and that of macOS with, say, illumos, I would care not one bit, because this wouldn't threaten my rights. FreeBSD respects user freedom, and so does illumos. Source: over 1 year ago
  • OSes with native/root ZFS besides FreeBSD and Proxmox?
All the Solaris family like illumos and openindiana. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Solaris 11.4 free for non-production personal use
Why? There is already an active open source fork of Solaris with better licensing terms than what Oracle offers - Illumos / OmniOS - https://illumos.org/ . - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • Why half of my ram is used? Only whatsapp and spotify are open.
The original was Unix was developed at AT&T starting in 69. It was itself a descendant of Multics. BSD was created at first to extend Unix, then as license costs increased, Unix code was replaced with new code, until eventually BSD was a stand alone product. Unix System V was the last majorly successful version of original Unix. The last System V descendant around now is https://illumos.org , but it has BSD code... Source: over 2 years ago
  • The Sun xVM will be able to passthrough my GPU ?
Not for OpenSolaris, specifically, since it was discontinued. However, look into Illumos and Solaris 11 official documentation to see what's supported. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Most Unix SysV-like Linux distro
If you want to go all the way UNIX check out https://illumos.org/ . Not sure what you can actually do with it as I haven’t tried it but it’s a proper UNIX distribution. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Is anybody running HA router or firewall on a stick? How? Why? How's it working out?
Yeah, I use OmniOS as a file server - it's much easier to use in a Windows domain environment because it has Solaris kernel SMB instead of using Samba. Plus, I love ZFS. It's not actually BSD, it's an OpenSolaris fork. Illumos is the upstream project: https://illumos.org/. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Ubuntu Kernel Update and ZFS Not Working
For even tighter integration go for something illumos based. Here there's even fewer devs and drivers than BSD. Seems like the better the tech, the fewer users/devs/drivers. Source: about 3 years ago
