  The original was Unix was developed at AT&T starting in 69. It was itself a descendant of Multics. BSD was created at first to extend Unix, then as license costs increased, Unix code was replaced with new code, until eventually BSD was a stand alone product. Unix System V was the last majorly successful version of original Unix. The last System V descendant around now is https://illumos.org , but it has BSD code... Source: over 2 years ago

  Yeah, I use OmniOS as a file server - it's much easier to use in a Windows domain environment because it has Solaris kernel SMB instead of using Samba. Plus, I love ZFS.
