All I can find on the status of Armbian images for Helm v1 hardware is in the farewell message at thehelm.com: "We are still working on firmware updates for v1 servers to run Armbian." I am very much looking forward to having my v1 server running a Linux server so I can repurpose it, and for all other v1 owners to have that same option. So much good, and once quite expensive, hardware needs to be saved from... Source: about 1 year ago
I guess it depends on which parts they need to be better. From a functionality standpoint I would list, hey.com, fastmail and icloud as better. mailbox.org is better on being a traditional mail host you access using your own client (no wierd bridge app). hey.com and icloud are US hosted if that matters to you. For the semi selfhosted options https://thehelm.com seems like a really good option. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

There are some attempts: https://thehelm.com/ The problem is that it's not cheap to keep running, if you want it to integrate with the rest of the Net (i.e. Also handle email and such). - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago

If you're willing to spend some upfront money, a Helm server is a great idea. It's a small server that will host VPN, email/calendar/contacts, and photo/file storage on a device you own and hold the encryption key to. Just gotta plug it in to your network and it handles the jiggly bits. https://thehelm.com/. Source: over 2 years ago
Having said that I'd look at The Helm: https://thehelm.com/ They provide an all-in-one hardware/service solution that should be well suited for an SMB. Source: over 2 years ago
There's the helm. Looks like they get around email blocks by curating Amazon ip addresses to keep them off block lists. Source: over 2 years ago
It's not all that difficult if you have the money to pay for a pre-packaged solution. https://thehelm.com/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
The future is (hopefully) decentralization. The FB shutdown yesterday and all these hacks also drive the point home- having all your eggs in one basket is a terrible idea. And you don't have to worry about the inevitable major hacks if you have your own mini server! (something like https://thehelm.com/). Source: over 2 years ago
> No matter what Apple and ProtonMail and similar companies tell you, you cannot buy privacy off-the-shelf. You can. It's just not that cheap, and not quite as convenient. https://thehelm.com/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
I could host a VM, I could run Poste or Malfurious MailServer. I could buy Helm (thehelm.com.). Source: over 2 years ago
Can anyone explain why self-hosted appliances that "just work" have not gained traction? Surely it is not impossible to ship one [0], with a usable chat and bulletin board app. Is it a chicken and egg thing? Like, the masses won't use something unless the rich use it to signal class, the rich won't use it to signal class unless its UX is polished, and its UX won't be polished until it makes money?
