  • Newbie Question- I have a school logo that is circular, but the file saves it as a square with white background. Is there a way I can "cut" the circular logo out so I can etch it on our Glowforge?
Does the Glowforge require a PNG or JPEG? If so, you may be better off with GIMP (gimp.org) and performing a color erasure (https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Changing_Background_Color_1/). Source: almost 4 years ago
  • WIP: is the face proportion right for the body?
I use Deforum Stable Diffusion and edit on Gimp. Didn't get the results I was looking for with the "algos," ended up doing my usual thing (upscale, crop, tweak, img2img, graft it in). If I were to share the end result should I make another post? Or would that be considered spam (since I already posted the WIP once, even though it was for asking a question)? • ILPT Request : how can i get photoshop for free?
Of course, if you require the latest version of everything, then you need to do some other things, but I am sure that even the old CS2 edition is more than good enough for most of the Adobe users. Or download free Gimp. Source: almost 4 years ago

  • Since Adobe is trying to be like Netflix, What are some good (free) alternatives to the software?
Depending on the purpose, I'd name Gimp for a general photo editor, Photodiva for a portrait editor and Clipify for a video editor. Source: almost 4 years ago

In a serious note, I don't believe that is possible. You might be able to look up how to import any font there, then just point to the Impact.ttf, if possible. GIMP is pretty easy to learn for dogelore posting. (Also it's free software, don't buy it on the Microsoft store, https://gimp.org) If you're on a Chromebook you're gonna need to find the Impact.ttf online because it's a Microsoft copyrighted font. Well, now you've made me look like an idiot with the original post. What 'computational resources' are needed here, a 2nd-gen GPU? I think this kind of object removal would be awesome if it were implemented as a Gimp plugin. Summary of the public mentions of GIMP

GIMP, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, has cemented its place in the software world as a powerful, free alternative to commercial graphics editing tools like Adobe Photoshop. As open-source software, GIMP offers a highly customizable experience and a comprehensive suite of tools for photo editing, graphic design, and digital painting. Here is a synthesis of the current public perception surrounding GIMP based on recent product mentions.

Versatility and Capabilities

GIMP is recognized for its versatility. Users can employ it as a basic paint tool, a robust photo editor, or a means to batch-process images. Additionally, GIMP's open-source nature allows for extensive customization through plugins and extensions, boosting its functionality far beyond its base offering. This flexibility is appealing to those who seek to tailor their software environment to specific project needs.

Strengths Compared to Competitors

While Adobe Photoshop is often considered the industry standard for photo editing and graphic design, GIMP holds its own as a no-cost alternative. It competes well with other free software, often being recommended alongside or above options like Krita and Photopea, especially among Linux users who have fewer native choices. Furthermore, GIMP is praised for its support of multiple programming languages which is advantageous for users interested in developing plugins or scripts.

User Experience and Learning Curve

One area where GIMP receives mixed reviews is its user interface and ease of use. Many notes that its functionality and interface are not as intuitive as those of Photoshop, potentially posing challenges for beginners. However, GIMP provides various tutorials to aid in user education, which mitigates the learning curve to some extent. This attribute positions it as a more suitable choice for users with some technical competency or those willing to invest time in learning a new tool.

Limitations and Criticisms

Despite its advantages, GIMP does face limitations, particularly in comparison to its commercial counterparts. Criticisms often reference its performanceโ€”being slightly less responsive and resource-intensive. Additionally, its toolset lacks some of the quality-of-life features and advanced capabilities inherent to Photoshop, which may deter professionals reliant on those specific functionalities. Moreover, some users find GIMP's brush settings and workflow cumbersome in digital painting contexts, particularly when compared to tools like Krita.

Community and Support

GIMP's open-source model fosters a strong community of users and developers who contribute to its ongoing development and support infrastructure. However, itโ€™s important for users to be cautious of potentially harmful sites or misleading advertisements posing as official GIMP downloads.

Conclusion

Overall, GIMP remains a formidable tool for those seeking a cost-free alternative to commercial graphic design software. Its appeal lies in its open-source versatility and potential for extensibility. Although it may not replicate the full experience provided by professional-grade software, especially for polished design work, GIMP shines as an accessible and capable option for hobbyists and technically adept users who can appreciate its open framework and adaptability.

Not the best - however, it's open-source, free, and powerful enough on the whole.
