Gentoo Linux Review: Awesome Linux distribution for advanced users

10 Gentoo Tips!

have you seen the glibc ebuild? it's 1500 lines. lfs does it in less than 50

gentoo has a feature creep and bitrot problem that has been going on for no less than 15 years. glibc is a package that should be closely guarded as it is at the CORE of your system.

  • cargo-c common questions
When I notice some rust software sporting a C-API that I'd consider packaging in Gentoo I tend to provide a patch to add the few metadata entries needed to have cargo-c do all the work, some other people politely ask if cargo-c is supported and sometimes it is an uphill battle usually because the project maintainer doesn't know the required effort is minimum or is not aware setting crate-type=cdylib is not enough. - Source: dev.to / almost 2 years ago
  • Warm Welcome to Linux P2
What thinly separates distros (apart from the GUI) is the package manager (PM). There are two main distinctions: source and binary based. Source-based distros are managers that download the source files, and then build them while following their recipes. We must build everything ourselves, including the core system components. The most notable examples come from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) family and... - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago

I'm also planning on installing Linux From Scratch (https://linuxfromscratch.org) for educational purposes. However, I might end up daily driving it. TL;DR: It doesn't matter that much for everyday use, just for problems, package manager, and release cycle. Nobody's situation is the same, but just as a word of advice, for a first distro, unless you're willing to learn a lot, you should probably stay away from Arch or Gentoo. Summary of the public mentions of Gentoo

Gentoo Linux holds a unique position in the Linux ecosystem, renowned for its highly customizable nature, which primarily attracts experienced users who desire granular control over their operating system. This source-based distribution is praised for allowing users to compile their systems from source code, enabling thorough customization and optimization tailored to specific hardware and user needs.

Many of Gentoo's public mentions emphasize its flexibility and rolling-release model, which offers the advantage of continuous, incremental updates rather than periodic major releases. This approach allows users to have the latest software versions without waiting for a new release cycle, though it may pose stability challenges. Gentoo's ability to be a learning tool stands out as a key feature. The installation and configuration process requires an in-depth understanding of system components, making it a compelling choice for those eager to expand their technical knowledge. This feature is often highlighted as both an asset and a potential hurdle, catering well to users who find satisfaction in mastering complex systems but potentially deterring those who seek a more straightforward setup.

Several discussions focus on Gentoo's potential for machine-specific optimization, a characteristic underlined by its naming inspiration from the Gentoo penguin, known for its speed. The distroโ€™s source-based approach means many packages are built from the ground up, although some larger packages may include precompiled binaries for convenience, reflecting a pragmatic balance between performance and ease of use.

Gentoo's robust community support and comprehensive documentation are frequently cited as valuable resources for troubleshooting and learning. However, it is also noted that users might encounter server accessibility issues, as mentioned in discussions regarding site downtime. Despite this, the assistance available through forums and the well-maintained wiki is highly appreciated by its user base.

Within the broader context, Gentoo is often compared to its Linux counterparts like Debian, Arch, and Ubuntu. While Debian and Ubuntu are noted for their stability and user-friendliness, Gentoo and Arch are lauded for their flexibility and customization potential. This diversity within the Linux ecosystem allows users to select distributions that best meet their personal or professional needs.

Gentoo's user base is characterized by those who prefer software control and customization over user interface convenience, as reflected in opinions advocating it as a learning tool for budding computer science students. Despite its demanding nature, Gentoo is also recognized for its effectiveness in running smoothly on diverse hardware platforms, including less powerful or older systems.

Overall, Gentoo's reputation as a Linux distribution is one marked by its distinctive Identity: a powerhouse for those who wish to explore the depths of Linux, offering a unique blend of educational value and performance optimization. Users frequently express dedication to Gentoo, noting it as a rewarding choice for those inclined towards technical exploration and performance tuning. However, those new to Linux or seeking a more straightforward computing experience might find it challenging compared to more user-friendly distributions.
