Ubuntu is a Debian Linux-based open source operating system for desktop computers.

TL;DR: It doesn't matter that much for everyday use, just for problems, package manager, and release cycle. Nobody's situation is the same, but just as a word of advice, for a first distro, unless you're willing to learn a lot, you should probably stay away from Arch or Gentoo. I personally had no problems with Arch, but I also probably know more than your average guy on the street when it comes to computers. If I was to recommend you something today, it would probably be Arch Linux GUI because it's Arch with a graphical installer, or so I've heard. Of course, you should expect things to break if you go with a rolling-release distro like arch over a stable-release distro like Ubuntu. If you want something a bit more stable, I'd say one of your best bets is Kubuntu if you're coming from Windows and Ubuntu for MacOS.

That really depends on your usecase and where you're coming from. From what I've heard as well as experienced, for someone coming from Windows, Linux Mint with Cinnamon is a common one. A big thing is not to get held up on distro specifically, since the only big things that you can only change with a lot of time and effort are package manager and other under-the-hood things that don't really affect the end user all too much. The main thing you should look at is the different desktop environments, or DEs. For Windows users, I'd probably recommend KDE Plasma, while for MacOS users, I would probably recommend GNOME or Cosmic, once it releases.
