Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing FlexiBudget.app.
  1. How would you describe the primary audience of FlexiBudget.app?

    • People who prefer to enter their finances manually rather than hand credentials to a bank-aggregation service โ€” the same audience that historically chose YNAB or Goodbudget.
    • Especially useful for those who own one or more vehicles and want service, fuel, and total-cost-of-ownership tracking alongside their budget.
    • Multi-currency users (expats, freelancers paid in foreign currencies, cross-border commuters, travelers) benefit from proper historical FX handling.
    • Careful budgeters who want their data to be theirs and their tools to work offline.
  2. What makes FlexiBudget.app unique?

FlexiBudget combines personal budgeting with a proper vehicle ledger in one app. Every refuel, service, and part is tracked per vehicle with parts-and-labor breakdowns and cost-per-kilometer, and the same entries feed directly into your monthly budget โ€” no double entry.

The dashboard is fully customizable with your own tabs and widgets, so you see what you actually care about, not what the app decided is useful.

Multi-currency is handled with historical exchange rates, so past transactions stay accurate no matter when you enter them.

Runs offline, no bank connections, no ads, no data sold.

  3. Why should a person choose FlexiBudget.app over its competitors?

If you already juggle a spreadsheet or two apps to track budgeting and car expenses, FlexiBudget replaces both.

Compared to bank-sync budgeting apps (Mint, YNAB, Monarch), your data stays on your device by default, the dashboard is yours to shape (not a fixed layout), and there's no โ‚ฌ99/year price tag โ€” because there's no bank-aggregation cost to pass through.

Compared to fuel-log apps (Fuelly, Drivvo, Spritmonitor), you get the same vehicle tracking plus real budgeting, multi-currency with historical FX, and multi-vehicle support including PHEV/EV split tracking.

  4. What's the story behind FlexiBudget.app?

FlexiBudget started in 2016. Back then our family had three cars, and I was the one tracking it all โ€” not because anyone needed me to, but because I wanted to know the real cost of ownership for each of them. Without a spreadsheet, remembering what was done on which car and when was a headache. My personal budget lived somewhere else entirely, in various apps I've tried over the years (YNAB, Spendee, MoneyWiz, Goodbudget, Wallet, and some I don't even remember). I also tried the obvious car apps (Drivvo, Fuelio, Simply Auto, etc). Neither side of that setup was broken, exactly. It just meant a lot of manual work, and the two never talked to each other. Fuel is a car expense and a monthly budget line, but nothing let me see both.

The specific pain wasn't the tracking itself, it was everything you had to do with the data afterward. Finding a specific record across years of history. Building yet another formula to get a parts-vs-labor ratio, or cost per kilometer. And especially: I travel a few times a year, so my life runs in 4โ€“5 currencies at once โ€” breakfast in EUR, dinner in GBP, fuel in Poland, a service in Germany, car parts ordered from the UK โ€” and bringing all of that to a base currency was an extra step every single time. Back when I was looking, every app also used today's exchange rate for a transaction I entered months later, quietly making my past wrong. Most of the time I'd just dump the record in and never actually analyze it.

So I built the thing I wanted:

    • Budgeting and vehicle tracking in one place
    • Historical FX done properly, so past transactions stay accurate
    • Offline-first โ€” sometimes you want to check your budget or car history on a plane, on a train, in an underground parking, and there's no internet
    • No bank connections. I trust my bank credentials to myself and my wife, not to a third-party aggregation service.
    • A dashboard I could actually shape to show what I care about, not a fixed layout someone else decided on

It took a while. The first version in 2016 was completely different technology and mostly a personal tool for me. It slowly evolved over the years as my own needs shifted โ€” new cars, new countries, new currencies, more history to keep. I switched over to FlexiBudget fully in 2023. Once I trusted it enough to put my own history in, I started thinking other people might find it useful too โ€” and spent more time getting it ready to go public.

If you've ended up with a spreadsheet or two of your own and are quietly tired of not using the data in them, this is probably built for you.
