If you really want the apex domain to work you'll either need to switch to a different DNS provide (like DNS Simple or use a service like mine Expedited WAF which will give you a static inbound IP which you can set an A record for. Source: over 4 years ago
Choices really do depend on what you actually want out of a registrar. For example, if loads of rich automation is your thing dnsimple are great. Or you can pick someone cheaper but use cloudflare for your actual records, since CF have a fantastic API, crazy fast propagation, and integration with the rest of their ecosystem - at the cost of having an extra account, extra complexity, etc. Cloudflare are themselves...
