  • Photomator for Mac
I'm pretty new to photography. I understand a lot of the basics (ex-wife shot as a professional hobbyist for a few years) but never really paid much attention to her editing workflow. Adobe already gets me for $20/mo for Illustrator (because designers) and I looked at alternatives. I've been using darktable http://darktable.org since I got my camera about a month ago and it's nice enough for me. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
  • Nudibranch (Nembrotha cristata), Verde Island, Philippines, April 2023
Thank you! The shot was gently edited in darktable. More TG-5 / single strobe examples here. Source: about 3 years ago
  • I've seen it with Adobe
No, unfortunately not. But check out the free Darktable app which is similar on darktable.org and also this list https://petapixel.com/best-free-raw-editing-programs/. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Exporting a RAW file. Is it possible without the format changing? If I export to another folder on my mac it becomes a .jpeg, to Lightroom it becomes a .jpg, to Photoshop it becomes a .tiff. I want to be able to edit the RAW file, a .dng in another app that is not Apple proprietary.
It sounds like you might want non-destructive editing. Look at something like darktable.org or Lightroom. You can edit your RAW files in multiple different ways, i.e., effectively keeping multiple copies of edited RAW files around. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Software to edit and enhance Photos (JPG and RAW).
If you're looking to learn more complicated software without having to rent it while you do, there's Darktable. Rawtherapee is another app in the same category, and usually appeals to people who don't like Darktable's interface. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Open-source personal blog sites
I still build from scratch occasionally (I gimp.org built from scratch but that's still using Pelican as the SSG). These days I'm not above dropping in a framework like bootstrap or tailwind or skeleton (used for darktable.org) and just focusing on fiddling. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Photo and video settings for realistics beamshots
RAW, on the other hand, when rendered to a screen will look bad. It will be low-contrast and desaturated, which you'll need to adjust to your liking in a photo editor before exporting as a jpeg. Snapseed is a decent on-device option for Android with a shallow learning curve. Darktable is a powerful PC-based editor with a steeper learning curve. There's also a bunch of paid stuff, with Adobe Lightroom being the... Source: almost 5 years ago
  • What is the best Linux distro for a Windows user to edit photos and 4k video on?
As for adobe apps, I highly doubt that those would work (never tried it myself tho). I personally use darktable as a replacement for LR and gimp as a replacement for PS. For video editing, kdenlive is a good choice that should work on almost every distro, although I like DaVinci Resolve more. The problem with resolve is, that officially it just supports CentOS as distro, but there is an unofficial installer out... Source: almost 5 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Darktable

Based on the recent discussions and product mentions, Darktable emerges as a noteworthy player in the realm of image editing software, particularly within the sphere of open-source alternatives to popular commercial products like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. As an open-source tool, Darktable is praised for its affordability and accessibility, giving it a definite edge for photographers and editors seeking high-quality editing capabilities without the constraints of a paid subscription.

Key Strengths

Darktable distinguishes itself primarily with its robust set of features tailored for photo editing rather than organization. Users highlight its comprehensive editing capabilities that cater particularly well to RAW file processing. The software allows for non-destructive editing, enabling users to make extensive adjustments without permanently altering the original file. This feature is especially favored by photographers who require multiple versions of an image or wish to preserve the integrity of their original shots.

Another major advantage is Darktableโ€™s cross-platform compatibility. The interface, which remains consistent independent of the desktop environment (be it Linux or otherwise), provides users with flexibility in choosing their operating system without having to compromise on user experience.

Usability and Learning Curve

However, Darktable is often described as having a steeper learning curve, which might deter beginners or those seeking more straightforward solutions. Comparatively, tools like Snapseed or Lightroom, known for their user-friendly interfaces, are mentioned as having a gentler onboarding process. For individuals new to photo editing or those unfamiliar with open-source software, Darktableโ€™s complexity may present a challenge requiring dedication to master.

Popular Among Certain Segments

Darktable is especially popular among Linux users, who frequently look for robust, open-source applications that can meet their creative needs outside the proprietary ecosystem of Adobe. Its performance on Linux makes it an attractive alternative to mainstream software, especially in environments where Adobe applications may not perform efficiently or are not supported.

Community and Ecosystem

Usability aside, the essence of Darktableโ€™s charm lies in its active community and regular updates, which ensure that the software evolves with technological advancements and user feedback. This community-driven development is a hallmark of open-source software, providing users with a continuously improving tool.

Conclusion

In summary, Darktable stands out as a powerful, free alternative for photo enthusiasts seeking advanced editing capabilities without the financial commitment associated with commercial software. Its strengths lie in its robust feature set for RAW editing and cross-platform functionality, although its steeper learning curve and interface design can pose challenges for beginner users. For those established within or transitioning to a Linux environment, Darktable offers a compelling option, fortified by its active community and continuous updates.
