  • I tried making artificial sunlight at home
Very cool. I’m the CEO of Innerscene (https://innerscene.com) and we make a commercial artificial skylight that uses some of these concepts. Actually the coelux ht25 model is almost identical to what you made but using smaller lenses and more LEDs - however the effect they were able to achieve still isn’t that great, the sun looks like a giant orb and once you get a few feet away you can make out a sun at all. ... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Someone should probably start a bright home lighting company
I live in Sweden (country with severe darkness) and just bought two Virtual Sun united from https://innerscene.com/ NOTE: Be extremely careful when transporting/moving these units, they easily break. The supplier who imported them on my behalf got two shipments with broken units until they finally got one that wasn't damaged. This happened despite FRAGILE markings on the packaging. • Map I created to show sun exposure for any mountain - shademap.app
Great job OP! I love how snappy your app is. And it's great that there are now more and more tools being developed in this scope. I started out some years ago with app.shadowmap.org – out of being depressed in Viennese/Austrian winters (narrow roads, low Sun … you get it), in an attempt to find the Sun in and outside of the city. And now this tool is used in various fields – including backcountry/outdoors – which... Source: over 4 years ago
  • Death Valley hits 130 degrees, near world record
It's a bit tricky with high zoom levels because there might be a mountain 5 miles away that's casting shade on your block but at high zoom levels, features far away tend to be ignored for performance reasons. I've been using the map for mountaineering and in my experience it's quite accurate +/-2 to 3 minutes. Do you live in the extreme north or south? Maybe the elevation data for your region is not accurate. The... - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago
