vatnode is an EU VAT validation API built for developers, SaaS platforms, fintech products, e-commerce, and ERP integrators selling B2B across Europe.

Basic VAT APIs usually return only valid: true. vatnode returns a richer audit-ready validation record: VIES consultation number for qualified checks, checkId, verifiedAt, source authority, company data, and country VAT rate details in one REST response.

Use it at checkout, before invoice generation, during B2B onboarding, or as part of recurring customer VAT monitoring.

  • EU VAT validation via REST JSON
  • VIES consultation number for qualified checks
  • checkId + verifiedAt audit trail fields
  • National registry fallback and enrichment for covered countries
  • Local VAT name, abbreviation, currency, and rate tiers
  • Cached responses under 50ms; live checks typically 200โ€“800ms
  • Optional VAT monitoring and webhook alerts on paid plans
  • EU-hosted in Germany
  • Test keys for deterministic CI/CD
  • Free tier, no credit card

Built for teams that need more than a boolean VAT result โ€” they need validation evidence they can store with invoices and customer records.

VATnode.dev features and specs

  • VIES consultation number
Returns the official VIES consultation number for qualified VAT checks, so you can store audit-ready evidence with every invoice.
  • Audit trail fields
Every response includes checkId and verifiedAt so you can prove when a VAT ID was validated and which check produced the result.
  • National registry fallback
Falls back to national tax authority APIs (RO, CZ, DK, FI, FR, PL, SE, DE) when VIES is unavailable, so validations don't fail during EU outages.
  • Country VAT metadata
Each response includes the country's standard, reduced, super-reduced, and parking VAT rates plus local VAT name and currency.
  • VAT monitoring subscriptions
Re-validates customer VAT IDs on a schedule (weekly on Starter, daily on Pro) so you catch deregistrations and address changes.
  • Webhook alerts
Get notified when a monitored VAT record changes โ€” company name, address, or validity status โ€” with signed webhook deliveries.
  • Sub-50ms cached responses
Cached lookups return in under 50ms; live VIES checks typically resolve in 200โ€“800ms.
  • Test API keys
Deterministic test keys (prefixed XX) return fixture responses without hitting VIES or consuming quota โ€” built for CI/CD.
  • EU-hosted infrastructure
Hosted in Germany on EU-owned infrastructure. GDPR-native, no US data transfer.
  • Developer-first REST API
Clean JSON REST API, OpenAPI spec, free tier with no credit card, and documented per-country VAT ID formats.

Overall verdict

  • Socket for Python is a solid choice for teams wanting proactive, automated security monitoring of their Python dependencies, offering strong supply chain attack detection though it works best as part of a layered security approach rather than a standalone solution.

Why this product is good

  • Detects malicious code patterns, typosquatting, and suspicious install scripts in PyPI packages before they cause harm

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing VATnode.dev and Socket for Python.

What makes your product unique?

VATnode.dev's answer

vatnode returns the official VIES consultation number for qualified checks โ€” a piece of evidence most commercial VAT validation APIs don't surface. Combined with checkId and verifiedAt fields in every response, it gives finance and engineering teams a defensible record they can store with each invoice. When VIES is unavailable, vatnode falls back to national tax authority APIs across multiple EU countries instead of just failing the check.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

VATnode.dev's answer

Three reasons:

  1. Audit-ready evidence by default โ€” VIES consultation number, checkId, and verifiedAt come with every qualified check, no special plan or extra call required.
  2. EU-hosted infrastructure โ€” servers in Germany, GDPR-native, no US data transfer. Important for European SaaS, fintech, and public-sector buyers.
  3. Developer-first โ€” clean REST JSON, OpenAPI spec, deterministic test keys for CI/CD, free tier with no credit card, transparent per-country format rules.

It's built for teams that need more than a boolean VAT result.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

VATnode.dev's answer

Developers and engineering teams at:

  • B2B SaaS companies selling across the EU and applying the reverse-charge rule
  • E-commerce and marketplace platforms with EU business customers
  • Fintech and billing infrastructure providers
  • ERP, invoicing, and accounting integrators
  • Compliance and finance teams who need defensible VAT validation records

Secondary audience: accountants and tax advisors who want a reliable API behind their workflows.

What's the story behind your product?

VATnode.dev's answer

vatnode was built by a Finland-based former CTO with 25+ years of experience shipping B2B software, VAT-aware e-commerce, invoicing systems, and payment integrations across European markets. The recurring pattern in those projects was the same: every commercial VAT validation tool returned a boolean, but finance teams needed an actual paper trail โ€” the kind tax authorities expect when reviewing reverse-charge invoices. vatnode is the API that should have existed years ago: VIES consultation number, structured audit fields, national fallback, EU-hosted, developer-friendly.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

VATnode.dev's answer

  • Backend: Hono, Node.js, TypeScript
  • Database: PostgreSQL with Drizzle ORM
  • Cache & queues: Redis, BullMQ
  • Auth: better-auth (OAuth, magic links, passkeys)
  • Frontend: Next.js 15, React, Tailwind CSS, TanStack Query
  • Payments: Stripe
  • Infrastructure: Docker, Caddy, Coolify on Vultr (Germany, EU)
  • Validation sources: EC VIES SOAP service + national tax authority APIs

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

VATnode.dev's answer

Customer list is not public at this stage. vatnode is in early access for EU-based SaaS and e-commerce teams; references are available on request via mail@vatnode.dev.
