Utterly started with a real person's need. The founder and his wife run an online language school, and one of their students was partially deaf — she relied on lip reading and asked if they could provide "subtitles" for the lessons.

Looking for a solution, nothing available met all three requirements: private, fast, and accurate. Most tools managed two out of three.

Knowing the field had advanced significantly with on-device neural models, the founder decided to build something that satisfied all three — and Utterly was born. That student says it changed her life, and she now uses live captions daily for remote work too.

That's the bar the app is built to meet: technology that meaningfully changes how people communicate.
