  Are you looking to send emails through the server directly ? You should never do that. Instead, you first need to choose an SMTP provider (mailgun, postmark etc) and then use a WOrdPress plugin that can use that SMTP.   I also want to recommend the WP Mail SMTP plugin. It makes setting up email really easy, including swapping out email services. I'm not sure how you'd integrate it into a custom app, but I'm sure it can be done. Source: almost 2 years ago
