Analysis

An editorial look at what each product does well and who it suits.

Trayzero.app
Microsoft Project

Overall verdict

  • Trayzero.app appears to be a niche productivity/menu-bar utility, but there is very limited public information, reviews, or verifiable track record available to confirm its quality, security practices, or ongoing support, so it should be evaluated cautiously through a personal trial before relying on it.

Why this product is good

  • Simple, focused concept that may declutter menu-bar or desktop tray icons
  • Lightweight tools like this often have minimal system resource usage
  • May offer a straightforward, no-frills user experience if it does what it claims
  • Low cost or free tier (if available) makes it low-risk to try

Recommended for

  • Users looking for a simple tray/menu-bar management tool
  • Mac or desktop users wanting to reduce icon clutter
  • Early adopters comfortable trying lesser-known indie apps
  • People who prioritize minimalism over feature-rich alternatives

Overall verdict

  • Microsoft Project is considered a good option for organizations and teams that require robust project management capabilities, especially those that are already using Microsoft products. However, it might have a steep learning curve for new users and may not be the best fit for smaller teams or simpler projects due to its complexity and cost.

Why this product is good

  • Microsoft Project is a widely used project management software that offers a comprehensive suite of tools for planning, executing, and tracking projects. It provides features such as Gantt charts, project scheduling, resource management, and collaboration capabilities, which make it a strong choice for handling complex projects. Its integration with other Microsoft Office products also enhances its functionality, providing a seamless experience for users already within the Microsoft ecosystem.

Recommended for

Microsoft Project is recommended for medium to large organizations, project managers, and teams managing complex projects that require detailed planning, scheduling, and resource management. It is particularly suitable for users who prefer a software that integrates well with other Microsoft tools and services.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Trayzero.app and Microsoft Project.

What makes your product unique?

Trayzero.app's answer

Trayzero is the only GTD app that delivers the full Getting Things Done method on both Android and iOS — completely free, with no account and no cloud sync.

Most GTD apps make you choose between fidelity and privacy. Trayzero gives you both:

  • Strict GTD fidelity — all five steps (Capture, Clarify, Organize, Reflect, Engage) are built into the workflow, not bolted on
  • 100% on-device storage — tasks live in SQLite on your device; nothing is sent to a server
  • No account, ever — nothing to sign up for, no email required
  • Free with no ads — the full workflow unlocks without payment
  • Open source — you can verify every privacy claim in the code

The closest local-first GTD competitor charges $99. Trayzero is free.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Trayzero.app's answer

Choose Trayzero if any of these matter to you:

vs. Todoist / TickTick — Those are cloud-synced task lists with GTD sprinkled on. Trayzero follows the full GTD method strictly, and your data never leaves your device.

vs. Things 3 / OmniFocus — Both are Apple-only and cost $50–$100+. Trayzero runs on Android and iOS, and it's free.

vs. Everdo — The closest comparison: local-first, strict GTD. But Everdo charges $99 for the mobile app. Trayzero is free and open source.

The short version: - You want real GTD, not a to-do list - You don't want your tasks in someone else's cloud - You don't want to pay for it - You use Android, iOS, or both

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Trayzero.app's answer

Trayzero is built for knowledge workers and individuals who want to use GTD properly — not a simplified version of it.

The primary audience:

  • GTD practitioners who have read David Allen's book and want an app that actually follows the method end-to-end
  • Privacy-conscious users who don't want their tasks and projects stored on a company's servers
  • Android users who have been left out of the best GTD apps (Things 3, OmniFocus are Apple-only)
  • Budget-conscious productivity seekers who want a serious system without a subscription or one-time fee
  • Developers and open-source advocates who want to inspect or contribute to the codebase

Trayzero works best for individuals managing their own work, projects, and commitments — it is not an enterprise or team tool.

What's the story behind your product?

Trayzero.app's answer

Trayzero started from a simple frustration: the best GTD apps were either locked to Apple devices, cost $80–$100, or weren't really GTD — they were generic task managers wearing a GTD label.

After searching for an app that faithfully implemented David Allen's full five-step method on Android, the answer kept coming back empty. So Trayzero was built to fill that gap.

The goal was straightforward: implement GTD properly, make it available on both Android and iOS, keep the data on the device, and charge nothing. No subscriptions, no accounts, no cloud servers holding your tasks.

Trayzero is an independent app — not affiliated with the David Allen Company — built by a solo developer who wanted a serious GTD system without the usual trade-offs. The source code is open, so anyone can verify the privacy claims or contribute.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Trayzero.app's answer

Trayzero is a native mobile app built for Android and iOS. Key technologies:

  • SQLite — all task data is stored locally on-device using SQLite; no external database or server
  • Mobile — distributed via Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS)
  • Open source — the full codebase is publicly available, so the technology stack and data handling can be verified directly

There is no backend server, no cloud sync infrastructure, and no third-party analytics SDK — by design. The simplicity of the stack is intentional: fewer moving parts means fewer ways for your data to leave your device.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Trayzero.app's answer

Trayzero is a free personal productivity app with no user accounts — so there are no named enterprise customers or B2B contracts.

The users are individuals: knowledge workers, students, developers, and GTD practitioners who want a private, local-first task system. Because no account is required and no data is collected, we don't have visibility into who uses the app beyond app store installs.
