Tempolio is an all-in-one time tracking, project management, and invoicing tool for independent freelancers.

Most freelancers pay for three separate tools. Toggl tracks time well but has no built-in invoicing, so you need a second tool to bill. FreshBooks invoices well, but its time tracking is an afterthought. Notion manages projects but knows nothing about your hours or your money. That's roughly $39/month for three apps that don't talk to each other, and a lot of copy-pasting between tabs.

Tempolio covers the whole pipeline in one place: track time against a project, manage the work, generate the invoice from those exact hours, send it as a PDF, and mark it paid.

What's in it

  • Time tracking โ€” start/stop timers linked directly to a project and task, with billable/non-billable flags.
  • Project management โ€” deliverables, deadlines, and client notes, all connected to the hours you tracked against them.
  • Invoicing โ€” turn tracked hours into a PDF invoice in one click, emailed straight to the client.
  • Invoice status โ€” see what's outstanding, what's overdue, and what's been paid.
  • Reports โ€” hours and revenue broken down by project and by client.
  • CSV import โ€” bring your history in from Toggl, from AND.CO / Fiverr Workspace, or from a generic client list.

Who it's for

Freelancers working alone: designers, developers, writers, and consultants who bill clients by the hour. It is not a team tool. There are no per-seat fees, because there are no seats.

Pricing

Tempolio is free to use during beta. No credit card, no subscription. Paid plans are planned but not yet active.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Tempolio and TrackingTime.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Tempolio's answer

Next.js, TypeScript, Supabase (PostgreSQL), Drizzle ORM, Clerk for authentication, Paddle for payments, Tailwind CSS with shadcn/ui, deployed on Vercel.

What makes your product unique?

Tempolio's answer

Tempolio closes the gap between the hours you track and the invoice you send.

Almost every tool in this category stops at the timer. You log your hours beautifully, and then you export a CSV, open a second app, and retype those hours as invoice line items. That handoff is where billable work quietly leaks.

In Tempolio the timer, the project, and the invoice are the same system. You track time against a project, and when the work is done those exact hours become the invoice โ€” one click, PDF, emailed to the client. No export, no second tool, no retyping.

It's also built for one person on purpose. No seats, no team features, no surveillance.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Tempolio's answer

It depends on what's currently annoying you.

If you use Toggl: the timer is excellent, but there's no invoicing, so you're paying for and maintaining a second tool just to bill. Tempolio does both.

If you use Harvest or Clockify: you're likely feeling recent pricing changes. Tempolio is free during beta.

If you use FreshBooks: the invoicing is strong but the time tracking is an afterthought. Tempolio treats tracked hours as the source of the invoice, not a side feature.

If you're stitching together Toggl + Notion + FreshBooks: that's roughly $39/month for three apps that don't talk to each other. Tempolio is one.

Where Tempolio doesn't win: it has no desktop or mobile apps, no browser extension, no automatic background tracking, and no third-party integrations. If those matter to you, Toggl is the more mature tool and I'd say so honestly.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Tempolio's answer

Independent freelancers working alone โ€” designers, developers, writers, consultants โ€” who bill clients by the hour and are tired of running three tools to do it.

Specifically: someone with a handful of active clients, who tracks time, manages their own projects, and sends their own invoices. No team, no employees, no one to delegate the admin to.

Tempolio is deliberately not for agencies or teams. There are no seats, no per-user pricing, and no manager view, because there is no manager.

What's the story behind your product?

Tempolio's answer

I'm a freelance web designer, and I was running Toggl for time, Notion for projects, and a spreadsheet for invoices. Every month I'd export hours from one, dig up what I'd promised in another, and rebuild the same invoice by hand.

The frustrating part wasn't any single tool. Each one was good. The frustration was that the hours I'd tracked and the invoice I had to send lived in different universes, and I was the integration layer.

So I built the thing I wanted: track the hour, attach it to the project, and let the invoice write itself from what's already there. Tempolio is that. It's free while it's in beta, and it's built by someone who uses it to get paid.

The 5 best time tracking apps of 2022
TrackingTime is a collaborative time tracking tool that looks different from many other time tracking apps. It represents time in blocks or windows, just as if that working time were an event on your calendar. It's not the only app that lays out your time in this fashion (Timeneye and Toggl Track do it, too), but it does offer the most opportunities for customization. For...
