Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing TalkNotes and SozAI.

What makes your product unique?

SozAI's answer:

SozAI takes a recording all the way to a finished document, instead of handing back raw text and leaving the rest to you.

  • Transcribes audio files, video files and YouTube links in 100+ languages
  • Labels who said what (speaker diarization)
  • Writes an AI summary and lets you ask questions about the transcript in a chat
  • Generates subtitles (SRT, VTT) and can translate the result
  • Exports to TXT, DOCX, PDF and subtitle formats

It also runs wherever the recording happens to be: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, the web, and Chrome extensions for YouTube and WhatsApp - one account, one history across all of them.

Two things set it apart from the usual desktop-first transcription tools. Language coverage goes well beyond the major European languages, including Kazakh and other Central Asian languages that larger tools handle poorly. And the free tier is 30 minutes every month, permanently, with no card required - not a trial that expires.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

SozAI's answer:

  • Mobile and desktop apps: Flutter - one codebase for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and Android
  • Web frontend: Next.js
  • Backend: Go
  • Speech recognition: AssemblyAI
  • Summaries, translation and transcript chat: large language models accessed through OpenRouter
  • Subscriptions: RevenueCat, for consistent billing across the App Store and Google Play
  • Authentication: Google and Apple OAuth

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

SozAI's answer:

Four practical reasons:

  • Price. Paid plans start at $44.99 a year. Most established transcription services are priced per month at a level close to that per quarter.
  • A free tier that does not expire. 30 minutes every month, no card. You can test SozAI on your own recordings, in your own language, before deciding anything.
  • Language coverage. 100+ languages, including Kazakh, Russian and other Central Asian languages that the bigger tools transcribe poorly or not at all.
  • Mobile-first. Most alternatives are built for a desktop workflow. SozAI records on a phone, processes on the device you have with you, and syncs to Mac, web and Chrome. A lecture or a client call becomes a transcript, a summary and subtitles without moving files between machines.

It is also a full pipeline rather than a transcription endpoint: diarization, summaries, translation, subtitle export and a chat over the transcript are included rather than sold as add-ons.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

SozAI's answer:

People who deal with recorded speech as part of their work but are not media professionals - they need the content of a recording, not an editing suite.

  • Journalists and researchers working through interviews
  • Students and lecturers turning classes into notes
  • Lawyers, doctors, psychologists and consultants documenting sessions
  • Sales and IT managers who need a written record of calls
  • Podcasters who need subtitles and show notes

A second group is anyone who receives speech in a language they do not read well, or too much of it to sit through: long voice messages, three-hour videos, meetings in a second language. For them the translation and summary features matter as much as the transcript.

The common thread is that they are individuals or small teams paying for themselves, which is why the free tier and the annual price point are built the way they are. Main markets: the United States, Canada, the EU and Central Asia.

What's the story behind your product?

SozAI's answer:

SozAI is built by Vast Flow, a small independent software studio in Almaty, Kazakhstan. "Soz" means "word" in Kazakh.

The project started from a gap we kept running into ourselves. Transcription tools handled English well and Kazakh, Russian and other regional languages badly - and the ones that worked were priced for Western companies rather than for a student, a freelance journalist or a one-person practice. Recordings also arrive from everywhere: a voice message on a phone, a YouTube link on a laptop, an audio file someone sends over WhatsApp. Tools that only lived on a desktop meant moving files around before any work could start.

So we began with an iPhone app and expanded from there - iPad, Mac, Android, a web version, and Chrome extensions for YouTube and WhatsApp - keeping one account and one history across all of them. The team is still small, which is what keeps the pricing close to the cost of running the service.
